CCFLs break pretty easily. So if it's going somewhere vibration prone I'd use LEDs. You can get either though. I prefer the look of neons. I don't like how the LEDs are a bunch of point sources. You can get diffused LEDs, which helps a bit, but still, they dont have the same smoothness as neons.

Leds are more or less the standard. They are incredibly efficient, pulling just mAs, can be brighter than neon, and there aren't any tubes to break. The only issue is uneven lighting since its not a uniform tube, but it's usually minimal.
I have led strips like that in my footwells, and the light pattern on the floor is pretty uniform. Staring at it you can see the hot spots, but you really have to look for it

Although on the Eclipse 3G forum I frequent the concensus seems to be the CCFLs are better for halos in headlights than LEDs. Apparently the CCFLs hold up to the heat better and last longer. Whodathunkit.

Thanks guys. These are going to place under the port on my new 4th order. The lights will not be visible, I just need something that will light up the front chamber, it's around 20 cubic feet, I just want a nice spooky glow coming from the port at night.

LEDs for sure then, I wouldn't ever recommend a CCFL in a port...
