how exactly do you calculate how long/surface area of the line for a TL enclosure?

not quite... a true standard transmission lines ATL, area of transmission line, (which you are referring to as the area in question) has a ATL start of 1.25-2.5 Sd of driver (or even add a chamber behind the speaker) and tapers down to Sd of driver at the mouth according to Dickanson... other authors have slight variation recommendations but are very, very close to this and imo most audiophiles follow Dickansons recommendations...

I wouldnt say that about yourself... there is theory, projects, examples, etc. there about TL design... plus MJKs spreadsheets are worth getting once you get serious about design...
