This is not related to car audio, but it is about bass and a few people have already mentioned it here so here's a thread for it.
Back story: Early this year there was a get together for subwoofer enthusiasts at Brandon's house. Ivan B. of Danley Sound Labs brought a few of their subs, the CS30, TH50 and THspud. A few weeks later we were contacted by Tom Danley for our thoughts and input on a kit subwoofer. 6 or 7 months and many many e-mails later the kit has been prototyped tested and is up for sale. Brandon and myself have the first 2 kits outside of DSL for evaluation. Anyway people into building enclosures and acoustic theory might find it interesting.
The cab is 44x59.5x16. It's made to be laid flat up against a wall or used in multiples as a riser in a room to place seating on. It's a tapped horn design using dual 12" drivers opposed mounted and wired to be in phase. Tom Danley is most responsible for developing the TH alignment over the last decades and he did all of the acoustic design of this cabinet. Their patent is pending. His build team designed the cabinet, kit and packaging. The intended FR bandwidth is 13hz-100hz give or take. The drivers are a unit designed to meet Tom's specs and custom built by Eminence loudspeakers in KY. It's a solid workhorse 12" drive unit with heavy venting and a hefty 3" coil.
I completed the kit build yesterday. Here's a picture build log. This is not your daddy's slot ported enclosure.
Thanks Ricci, comparisons look good considering all the variables. I am glad you are coming at this from a very skeptical angle (comparing this to an 18" high excursion LLT or a dual 15" high excursion sealed) while maintining some optimism (that it's still gonna be insanely awesome). I am anxiousely awaiting your opinion, your results. I'd like to squeeze some of these in a van, but I think I'm just gonna port 4 21's and call it a day. Keep us updated please!

Thanks Ricci!
Can you post the graphs as .PNGs and not JPGs? The compression algorithm is making it hard to read the first chart.

I've been listening to this sub for a few days and it is a beast. Looks like the peak output in my 4150cu ft room from 13ft away is about 125-130db from 50-100hz. That's combined with probably 115db or so 10-20hz. Maybe more. I'm not sure where it gets into trouble at yet. It's really clean on the low octave stuff. Just ear pressure. I think I'll get another for an extra 6db of headroom on top and to even out the room response.
Tom is the friggin man. What is coming out of 2 12" drivers is ridiculous. Driver for driver it totally crushes a ported box in efficiency, output and distortion.
Should easily do a 140 and maybe even 145db clean on music if you were to somehow get one into a van or big SUV.
Ricci... so you blew a HUGE powerhouse amp on XXX's, and you were guessin you were doin 120ish with <30Hz content..... vs 1 channel off 1 amp for 1 sub (2 12's) doin pretty darn close to that?

I haven't run that movie with the DTS-10 yet and definitly not at that level. Seriously until you've seen an UNFILTERED sub really try to put out the DTS LFE on that movie you have no idea. It's the nastiest thing I know of hands down. I'm talking about my coffee table scooting across the floor. There is very hot bass at 4 and 8hz on some parts, others are a giant mash of crap from 5-30hz all at once. It's a killer. If i get a chance I'll make a vid of Bass I love you and then I'll throw in that movie and leave the volume dial alone.
Also consider that the DTS-10 has a 2400w at 8ohms bridged amplifier on it. Not exactly chump change. It is much more sensitive above 30hz than 2 sealed XXX's obv.
so youre saying the DTS is it. This really is it. ?

No. There is no "This is it". I keep trying to tell you that. There is only a set of compromises. What I'm saying is that it is friggin badass and I really would like to own a pair instead of just one.
