the sa will have better thermal power handling as well.

anyone that blows an sa has their amplifier clipping bad.

NO! NO! NO!....

"out do" is a subjective statement

what everyone has said here is the SA line is likely a better built woofer with better customer service.

In the same box on that power they will likely perform exactly the same. If there is any difference at all it will be negligible and any perceived difference in sound will be that of the "listening preference" of the user.

I missed your question. Sorry mang. Okay, the box was 3.5 ft3 which wasn't so much a problem; it was because I decided to run a huge 8" PVC pipe port. It figured out to be 13.5" sq/ft tuned at 34hz. The sub didn't hit any mean lows or maybe it was because it was in such a large open space. I learned my lesson on that build. I could have used that port on like 4 SA-15's but one was complete overkill.

Couple viddys before and after I painted the enclosure.

Oh oh it's too big, yeah that's what she said:

In this vid at 1:00, I'm changing the x-over on the H/U which is why the sub jumps a few times:

I was the one wit the type x s bonehead lol you think 750 to 800 watts a piece in a sealed box is too much for a 1000 watt rated sub in not quite a cubic ft per.

Re: 2012 12" type r vs sundown sa12

I have ran both a single SA-12 and a single Type-R 12, they both used the same box and amp. The difference was pretty negligible; the SA sounded just as good and the R sounded about as loud. I didn't notice a huge difference between the two.

The type-r is the only 'mainstream' subwoofer I'd recommend to anyone. Still, I would go with the Sundown here because they are bulletproof and it's always good to support a great company like Sundown.

Re: 2012 12" type r vs sundown sa12

I abused the hell out of my old type arghs and they took it in stride. if the new subs are genuinely 1k rms, they should be pretty good. the sa wouldn't blow it away, but it is still a slightly better sub, and considerably cheaper, which is a big deal. I would say that sundown has the clear advantage on the cs as well. I.e. Jacob will stand behind the product should anything happen. I have never gone through alpine for a warranty, but I'd suspect its much more difficult than through Jacob.

Rms between companies often are not the same measurement. There is no scientific method for dedermining the rms of a woofer. One company may say 1000rms in a specific box at a specific impedance. Like 1k In a 1 cu ft sealed box at 4 ohms. Another company may say 1000w but they measure thers free air at .5 ohm (ie sundow). In reality if u put that same sub in a 1 cu ft box with 4 ohm power u may find that it takes 2k rms without any trouble.

You should really like those subs. I ran dual-2's so the BC3500 was running 1/2 ohm. Each sub was getting upwards of 2000+ rms and handled it without problem. The amp got hotter than the subs and when I took them out after selling the van, the coils tested out perfect and looked shiny and new. Yeah, you do get what you pay for and I still sold them for $700 on Craigslist a few weeks ago.

I needed three more to really move some air in that van. But the sub sounded great, the box was the culprit as to why it didn't hit real low. The Z's on the other hand had the side windows flapping in and out and the roof flexing so hard; I had a gallon jug of water (filled about a third) jumping 10" off the roof. Those were the best subs I've ever used so far, hands down.

I would say its a bit of everything but I don't build subs so I can't say with certainty that its any one piece or another. Either way I've done some nasty things to sundown subs and they seems to hold together well. I've seen others do worse. Watched a guy goofing off at one of our shop nights with his SA8v2's on an ns1 at .5 ohm I don't know if there still alive now but he was doing a 48 on them and they didn't die that night. I'm sure they wouldn't take it daily but I was still blown away.

Re: 2012 12" type r vs sundown sa12

With all things like which is louder, sounds better etc aside, I would take the sa's just because they can take a ton of abuse and will keep going. A local friend has a single sa-12. On one of our shop nights he gave us the thumbs up to blow the sub. After putting it on my BC5500 for 20 min we put the sub back in his car. I didn't have the power to blow it lol but I bet i can toast that type R in 20 seconds

Re: 2012 12" type r vs sundown sa12

Is this two type rs vs one sa or two sa's. If one sa I'd go the type rs. If two sa's the sa's would murder the type rs
