Default What to do with a blown 12" blown Diamond Audio D9 sub

I bought a blown 12" Diamond audio D9 sub from this guy for $15 & i'm having a hard time deciding on what to do with it. At 1st I was going to see how much it would cost to have Diamond Audio recone it, but then I started thinking about building a custom sub out of it. I've seen a lot of custom built subs on caraudioclassifieds and thought this basket and motor might make a good platform for a custom sub. Now I've never built or reconed a sub so I have a lot of studying to do if I go that route. Im wondering what you guys on here think? Would it be better to just have Diamond Audio fix it or could it make a good custom sub. Also if I decide to do a custom sub, where's the best place to get the parts?

I was thinking that it would be. So was $15 for it a good deal? Either way I'm excited. I've always wanted to do a custom sub. Thanks for the info, and I'm sure ill have plenty more questions as this project starts to come together.

Well since I've never done this before, i'd rather have someone who knows what their doing fix it. I'd like to make it a great daily sql sub that can hit the lows with authority and take 1200-1500 watts rms. To be honest, I wouldn't even know where to syart when it comes to what parts to use. Also any idea on what it would cost to do this? Just a estimate, so I know what to save up. I still may order the parts and Build it myself. I'm going to start watching videos on YouTube to see how hard it would be. I'd just hate to spend the money and mess it up. I'm on a pretty fixed income.

Little update on what's going on with the Diamond Audio D9 custom sub I'm planning on doing. After emailing fixmyspeaker.com the sub will have a 4 layer flat wound voice coil. They told me it was one of the best coils I could get for what I want the sub to do. They will be dual 2ohm coils. It will have dual stiff mirror imaging spiders with the dual leads attached to the spider. High roll rubber surround. As of the cone I want a nice stiff & light paper cone and im going with the carbon fiber dust cap. The sub will be able to handle 1500-2000 watts rms and its for daily use. I'm going to hopefully be shipping the basket out by the middle of next week. They said it will cost $175 even, which isn't that bad for the type of sub this should become. I'll get some pics of the sub as it is now up later today & when its finished I'll get those pics up asap. I was thinking of just ordering the parts & doing it myself, but I've never reconed a sub before & when I do recone a sub for the 1st time i'd rather it be a cheaper sub than this...I can't wait to get this subwoofer done

ouch.

psi is definitely the go to source for coils too.

I've always wanted a d9. I had a cm3, then went to a d6 and loved it. That was my first "real" sub. Anyways, considering the oddball coil size, that $200 and 8 week wait thing sounds sketchy. My vote is to see what diamond can do for you.
