This probably isn't the best forum to ask about SQ.
I foresee that you're going to get alot of suggestions for SQL subs that aren't 'SQ'. I think it's because most people here don't hava a clue what a pure SQ system actually sounds like, or should sound like.

But before anyone can help you, we need some idea of budget.

ok,

here's the MOST simple SQ system.

get a GOOD headunit.

lets assume an Alpine 9887 OR a Pioneer P880 RS

these 2 babies can go active and have good tuning options.

next, get a 4 channel amp or 2 2 channel amps.

If u want awesome and good sound, go look at Butler tube amps.. those are dam solid. I deal with them locally, best bang for the buck.
so there u go, u have ur front stage settled.

put 6.5" mids in ur door and tweets on ur dash/ A pillar for better imaging.

if possible Build an angled door pod to face ur mid up.

now for the sub, either get a good powered monoblk or a high Power 2 channel amplifier.

remember, in SQ, ur sub is not suppose to be heard. its really meant for the low rumbles and extensions. in competition, u get points deducted if ur sub bass is heard coming from the rear. remember, all your sound must be coming from the front.

as for your sub, some suggestions i feel would be a JL W7 ( but this sucker is a single 3 ohm, hard to match), IDmax ( easiest choice), JL W6, RE XXX ( if u have the power for it)

and there u go, remember, KEY IS IN THE TUNING.

u can have all the best sh1t, but if u don know how to tune ur setup, ur f**ked.

Personally, for a good combi, i like pure decks, a Mac deck, an old sch Naka deck or a Denon deck would be good. nice warm sound. Or the panasonic tube deck.

I'll couple this deck with an alpine H701 processor for tuning options and run an active setup.

If you are REALLY SKILLFUL, you will play around with active Xovers until u get the exact points u want ur freqs crossed at and then build my own passive Xover and it might have a smoother sound.

aniway, thats all for now.

have fun!

Theres a long thread with a bunch of SQ stuff that I was really surprised on the prices.

If hes lookin for something to give some volume when need be, yet still sound good, he doesnt need pure SQ equipment.

Get a nice set or two of some d/l/s comps, and a Stereo Integrity Magnum in a nice sealed box. Get a nice HU, run the comps active so you can pick your own crossovers for best sound, a nice amp, and make sure the install is good. Because I guarantee you bargain basement stuff could sound better than a $4,000 system if installed correctly.

The 500rms isnt much for the Magnum but in a decetn sized sealed box you should have more than enough output and wont EVER run into any trouble.

Thinking about it, I know a kid with a new 745. Its got some nice Comps (not sure of the brand) and 4 RF T1 10s in a sealed box firing into the cabin. Its all runnin off some Clarion amps and it sound great. Was surprised since Im usually not a fan of the sound of the T1s.

500 rms would do good on an IDmax.

on the note of DLS, i think these babies are kinda expensive in the US since they arnt from the US.

you can consider Zapcos too, or even the RF Power series ( clean power)

but remember, key is in the head unit and ur components.

as for your subs, u DO NOT NEED LOTS OF THEM. (unless u want a SQL setup).

1 single 12 is good enough. spend the rest on the money on good amps and components..

holy **** this is more than i was planning hahaha but thanks for the awsome info this isnt going to be a comp setup its is more just the fact that its a brand new bmw and he doesnt want the most bumpin system he wants a nice clean system as for custom door pods i dont think i would go that far i was thinking of putting in mb quart pce -216 in the front havent decided on the rears yet as for the deck it will be a top of the line double din most likely because he likes the whole navi system idea is this a smart choice for an sq setup or should i just stick with i single din setup? and you mentioned the tube amps i imagen those are fairly expensive could u get my a pricing on on of those that would match nicely with those mb quarts. as for a subwoofer i am stuck there i am considering the idmax and the jl w6 or 7 but what kind of amp should i go for if i go for the jl sub should i match it with either the 500/1 for the w6 or the 1000/1 for the w7 or get a better amp? and as far as crossover go i dont know how to do that yet but i would like to learn if u got tips or a site that can show me

ok cool that is more of what we where thinking of doing something that still sounds good but isnt pure sq i like the ST mag and actualy considered on and 500wrms isnt a set figure i will most likely power the sub to its specs as for the dls comps i dont think i have seen them before where could i find some of them ?

In that case for the Xover,

stick to an active setup.

first of, if i remember correctly, the BMW 7 series comes with the I drive and that might be a bitch to bypass cos that sh1t controlls everything.

also, do check, if i remmeber correctly, BMW only has 4" spkrs in the door.

looks like u are lookin for a simple SQ setup.

first off, look how u can install an aftermarket deck into the car.. BMW is a bitch to deal with.

remmeber, don get those fancy DVD headunits. go for something that had tuning functions. easiest is iether a P880 RS or an alpine 9887.

screw the rear spkrs cos sound from the rear will mess up ur front stage.

try your best to get a set of 6.5" into the door so that u have more freqs playin in front.

as for the sub, JL is a pain to power, but they sound is great! get a 500/1 to run a W6 is a nice sealed box and u'll have some nice lows. if price is an issue, get an IDmax and it'll solve ur problems.

remember, run an active front and it'll be easier to tune ur staging.

hope this helps man

Cheers

I was going to suggest using DLS amps, but they may not give you the output you are looking for. I have the A6 and A4 and hooked up that A6 to a TC Sounds underhung 12" driver and it didnt get as loud as it did with a kicker zx 2500.1 (wired at 4 ohms). I'll suggest the Alpine PDX amps. They are tiny and a couple hundred watts underrated (the 1000).

For your deck, well I have always liked Eclipse, but I went with an Alpine W200 because I always have passengers in my car and they like watching music videos and I watch movies while im on lunch if I'm not out with some co-workers. If you do go that route, be sure to use a processor (H701 using optical is what I would recommend).

For your sub stage, it all depends on how loud they want it. That is going to be hard to decipher. Here are a few I would recommend.

http://www.madisound.com/catalog/pro...products_id=79

These are pretty nice drivers as well (the MR's - go to mobile audio and its the first on the list under products) http://www.aurasound.com/

http://www.tubedriver.com/

here's the link for butlers.

they're also on the ROE store.

get a pair of 2150s or a single 475.

i jsut read ur post, u said u wanna integrate into ur navi system, double din decks only look good, but are useless for SQ( unless its a pure deck like the Btube). they lack tuning functions

IF it will be a bitch to bypass the Idrive for BMW, either get a ROckford 3sixty.2 to integrate into the OEM system

OR

get an audiocontrol L7 to boost up ur preout voltage and run an alpine H701. it wont be the best sound ( cos ur source aint good) but it'll sound good enough.

DLS amps are pretty awesome too, but think they're ex in the US. would be better to get a US branded amp ( my opinion)

If the owner is not particular on the characteristic of the amp, the PDX is a good choice.

BUT then again, it has its characteristic which may not be desirable to others. also my friends tested it out, it is unable to play lower freqs which some pople want.

How much into SQ is ur friend with the BM?

x2 on active 2-way, w/no rears. they won't even notice they dont have any rear speakers if you dont tell them. i never tell people i do...but i ask them how do the rear speakers sound? and they reply pretty good, which is when i tell them i have none. But I kinda disagree with the no dvd player thing. In all honesty, with a processor you can do plenty, but if you dont want to go wtih a processor then yes, i would most likely ditch the dvd units. i know my w200 is crap without the proessor. havent installed it yet so all i can do is adjust bass and trebble, how fun huh?

yo man

on the topic of the DVD player, alpine's W200/W202 can be hooked up to the 701 via optical or AI net.

this would greatly improve the the tuning functions. sorry for not being specific.

but i mean, most pple here ( i guess) love screens cos they are cool but don know how limited they are in terms of SQ functions. yes its dam cool to be able to watch porn in ur ride ( tried it last time and got lost on the freeway with my friends), but if u want SQ, DVD headunit ALONE is not the way to go.

Personally, i'm running an old sch rockford SQ deck ( RFX 8140) off a H700 processor, 3 way active. enough for me to tune.

Hi Ripteal,

I just played with the Ultimo sub this afternoon. Have one in the showroom.

Between the 2,

my vote goes to the 05 XXX. even my friend ( shop owner ) loves the XXX. but RE is not avaliable here.

there are 4 RE XXXs running around here in Singapore.

my friends all agreed, one good characteristic of the XXX is that,

when its not needed, its as though ur sub is not playing, this it does not interfere with ur front stage, but when u need the lows, this low beast will give u the rumbles effortlessly! but this bugger is a hunger MOFO.

now for the Ultimo.

the Ultimo is more of a " gentlemen's sub", good for people who do not like heavy bass.

2 weeks back, we just did an AB test btw a Morel Ultimo and a 12W7 off 2000 watts ( soundstream tarantula monoblk).

the W7 is a more "solid sub" with bass that has a " fuller body". it feels good. But to certain extent, it does not feel natural. i mean, for example, in Hotel California, when the kick drums came in, the bass was overwhelming. I liked it, but some pple felt it was just too much

for the Ultimo, it was more gentle and more natural, giving the right amout of bass for the right time.

Yeah I completely agree with you. As mentioned in the post before the one you are quoting i have the h701 that i'll be using with the optical wire. I thought it was optical or RCA's though, and the Ai-Net cable is needed no matter what. I tried using optical without the Ai cable and it didnt worked, called up Alpine and they said its required.

Another route processors besides Alpine is RF's 3sixty. Their 3sixty.2 can be had for 360 on eBay from High Desert Audio (aka Rockord).
