Default Serious Question: DD 9512G VS. RE XXX18 (w/ FI Recone)

So here's the deal. Im currently using a DD 9512G with an Audiopipe 30001d. I like it, it's loud, blah blah blah. But I also have a RE XXX18 (05 model that looks like FI BTL sorta) that is getting re-coned with FI softparts.

Here's the question:
-with the same box (about 5 ft^3 ported at ~37hz)
-same power (obviously the RE wouldnt handle the power as well as the DD)

which would be louder? obviously the RE/FI has 2x as much cone area, but the DD is a SPL oriented sub that handles more power.

what yall think. dont be biased.

The XXX won't do well in that size box ported, hell the rec. sealed is 4.4cuft(before disp). It will get loud, but will be peaky as hell, and lose ALL sq properties. I've had 2 of them, and both were louder and more musical overall sealed, than in too small ported boxes

Why would you use the same box?
They are completely opposite drivers.
If you have the space for the XXX try it out, but you'll need to make a new box.

i dont think the xxx18 could handle the power the dd could so i would have to say the dd in the right box with the right power!

For daily, I would take that XXX anyday over that DD....

That XXX will handle 2500 rms..the DD will take 3k maybe a lil more... but the more cone area is where its gonna be at.

That XXX has twice the cone area, and if you set your gains accordingly on the AP amp you will be just fine.

Or you can just say forget it and sell me the motor

Thumbs up Re: Serious Question: DD 9512G VS. RE XXX18 (w/ FI Recone)

I recommend you make a test to obtain your own conclusion. On the other hand without that test I can suppose that more cone area is an advantage for the XXX, but the XXX is a SQL sub and DD is for SPL. I don’t know what will sound louder but I can tell you, the XXX will sound better.

SPL doesnt mean it will be louder to the ear... only louder on the mic...

If both in proper enclosures, with proper power.. for DAILY listening and ground pounding the XXX is able to go lower and most likely louder to the ear... the mic will show a different approach...depending on a few things...

But I bet money on the XXX. Now if it was a 9515... I would be a lil skeptical on either side... but were talking double the cone area.

hmm...im really thinking now...im picking up the 18 tomorrow...i think im going to try it out..because if its louder then im stoked...if not, then im going to build a smaller box for my re 12....

you guys really think a smaller box will increase volume on my 9512g? im at like 5 ft^3 right now, lol

also, what are most people tuning their XXXs to? im thinking maybe 32-33? im not trying to lose volume... i know the picky SQ guys may say high 20s, but seriously, im a spl guy that thinks my DD 9512 tuned to 36 sounds good...lol

32 is fine with the XXX, but again it's going to need a decently sized box to see it's full potential.

My XXX 15 owned my MT 15 for daily ground pounding.... The XXX just hurt to listen to.

The MT did the upper end a bit better and was a lil louder on the mic.... But noobs just listening to them both swore by the XXX.

yeah i know what you mean RE_XXX when you say n00bs swear by it...i've been a long time SPL guy and when i ordered my XXX back in 05 i literally used it for like 2 months, wasnt enough volume for me...

im not sure what kind of power my XXX is going to be able to handle when i get it from FI..ill talk to scott...but if it can handle a bit more power then prior(1.6k), then maybe it would get a little louder? even spl-wise, not just musically louder???

i think you didnt have the right box before. doing a 140 @ 35hz........ hurtz!!!!
and i dont see why a 18xxx in the right box with that power couldnt get that. the pure cone area advantage should be enough to keep the xxx running with the dd regardless of the dd being a "spl" sub.
