Default Edead

So I just got owned by elemental designs. I bought 60 ft of edead v2 I put two layers on the inside of my rear quarter. Rolled down each layer then put dynamat extreme on the other quarter only one layer thick rolled down and it was still better. DO NOT BUY THIS STUFF not only did it suck for damping but it peeled of a couple hours later. I couldn't pull off the dynamat.

eDead v1², v1SE² and UE all have a butyl adhesive but as has been noted, use some sort of Mylar facing instead of aluminum foil. Foil is an important part of the damping mechanism so IMO, these products are severely compromised.

I'm guessing you used v1² since quite a few other people have reported adhesive failure with that product - the first I've run in to for a butyl product (way to go ED). It's pretty simple to see why this happens. The adhesive has the weakest bond strength I've seen and the facing has a very strong inherent curl. This combination can lead to the whole thing peeling itself off of the substrate or to the facing peeling itself away from the adhesive. ED has known about this for a long time. I'll leave it to you to decide why they keep selling it.

It's that v1SE² stuff that's more and supposed to be better, well more of a rip of anyway. The stuff doesn't even stick to itself I was just in the garage and cut to new peices off and stuck them to each other, backed my Car over it and then pulled it apart. I know you can't do that with dynamat. If you just touch dynamat to itself yiu can't peel it apart.

That really sucks. The only problems I've heard about previously were with the thinner v1². Points to really bad QC on ED's part. It almost sounds as if that might be asphalt. If you are curious, drop an inch square piece in an ounce or two of mineral spirits and let it sit for an hour or so. If the liquid turns brown, it's asphalt. If it turns black it should be butyl. I'd raise hell either way, but much more so if it is asphalt.

If you'd like, PM me and I can PayPal you enough to cover postage to send me a sample of what you got.

Yeah I cleaned the surface even if i didn't you would think the stuff would stick to itself. I drove a 3600 pound Buick LeSaber over the two peices and I could still pull it apart. The stuff sucks and I was just letting as many people know not to buy the stuff as I could. I think peal and seal would be a better alternative at this point. Elemental Designs will do nothing for me either no refund no partial credit NOTHING...

You did not actually expect eD to back up a warranty did you?

SO it sounds like you have taken all of the proper steps ,except for the research phase but what can you do ?
one question it's not like the original dynamat where you have to heat it for good adhesion ?

No butyl adhesive should need to be heated for proper adhesion. It does become more flexible, but that will only be an issue when everything involved is extremely cold - well below freezing.

Well I figured they would at least do something. When your a smaller company you would think you would want to have good customer service
so the name your trying to Build doesn't get trashed! I only asked if I could return the full roll of edead for credit back.

They told me I not a pro installer and I told them a pro wouldn't install it because it's crap. That's why I ordered two bulk packs of dynamat. It doesn't really matter anymore ED ripped me off and now I'm telling as many people as I can and I have alot of samples to give out if any of you want proof.

Just a quick update. I received the samples from Felonygtp and preliminary tests support his statements. So far the adhesive bond strength has tested as poorly as the v1² I tested over a year ago. This is clearly not the same adhesive formula I saw on the v1SE² last year. More to come.

Very high quality product. I've never heard of anybody who regretted making that choice.

Default Re: Edead

OH MY GOD!!! Everyone bags on eD so freakin much!!

Heating the eDead is RECOMMENDED to promote proper adhesion and make it more pliable. Guess what? Lord Dynamat says the exact same thing on ALL of its products!

It costs less than EVERY other sound deadener on the market. What the hell do you think you're getting for 1/4th of the price? It's like buying a Chevy Aveo and comparing it with a damn Mercedes-Benz!

The reason they didn't give you back any money is because if you know how to install it the **** doesn't come off! I've personally installed over 500sq ft of the v1se into multiple cars and not a single one has pealed off. If you follow the directions (included for a reason) you will get the desired effect from any purchased product. These are not trailer queens either, they are real world cars that are parked out in the hot ass chicago sun all day and the cold ass winters all night! Use denaturated alcohol to clean the substrate before applying, use a hair dryer on high to heat the product to the point that when held by the corner it hangs almost like a sheet of paper, then USE A CORRECT ROLLER (like the one they always include in my orders for free because they have exceptional customer service) to press it down onto the substrate. Use pressure to push it down then use the hair dryer to heat it up once again. After that maybe it'll stick and you all can get off of Dynamat's nuts!

I have used Dynamat and i will admit that it is easier to install for a novice. But if you take the time to install eDead correctly (usually 4-5 hours to do two layers for a full trunk for me and i've been doing this for 4 years) you can get the same results for half of the price of using dynamat. I installed a total of 8 layers of the edead 45 and 2 layers of edead 120 in an 88 cadillac fleetwood brougham and there is no rattle at all from the rear of this car. Mind you that the owner has literally filled the trunk with 6 15 inch Kicker cvxs. The box fills the trunk and back seat area and there is no rattle at all! This cost me approx. 300 bucks worth of product to do. Do the same thing with the other products and tell me how much it costs to get the same results.

Default Re: Edead

Installation wasn't the problem. Like i said before how is Edead going to stick to anything if it can't stick to itself. A nice clean surface isn't going to be sticky like a sound deadener adhesive. The Edead that is in my garage will pull apart if you put sticky side to sticky side and drive a buick lesabre over it. Their is no getting it to stick to anything and Elemental Designs wouldn't do anything about it. I sent some to Rudy to have it tested and then the guy's for Elemental Designs asked for a sample in a E-mail and said it was fine but I could return it for .98 cent a sq ft. What nice people right? They can't even buy there own product back for full price. There is alot of stuff that i'm not going into detail about just a basic over veiw of what happened to me when I bought there product. If you want some to check out I still have some in my garage just PM me your address and I will send it to you.

Maybe they sent you a b stock or one of the shipments was screwed up formula wise. I honestly tried your roll over it with a car experiment and the edead 45 i've got sticks to itself and won't come apart. The car is a 92 caprice with a 200 pound box in the trunk so i know weight wise it was about the same. I'll admit that is pretty ****ty of em not to simply replace your product if you can prove a failure of that level.
I just hate when people who haven't even tried the product say it sucks ass or don't buy it just to go with the group. I personally haven't had any probs yet but i see you have and i respect your frustration at the situation.
It's funny how ed sells thousand dollar cabinets for home audio but won't send you out a replace of some cheap ass sound deadening when they've been proven wrong!
I'll continue to back edead until i get a problem with it but if i do, i don't have a problem telling my customers to switch over to second skin.
