help with my 320a alt

so i installed my 320a alt today and i got it set with the adjustable voltage regulator by tunring the screw clockwise to stay at 14.5. i used my dmm that i bought from the matco guy that comes to my shop once a week. at the dmm its stays at 14.5 volts but on my dash it will read 14.5 and then after like 1 minute my voltage shoots up past 19, but that is all on the dash. my dmm never changes what is reads. so i decided to take my cherokee for a drive to see if that helps.....well it did a little. it will stay at the 14.5 on the dash and then shoot up just like at idle but then after driving for a little longer it goes back down to 14.5. does anyone know what is goin on here? could it be a bad voltage reader on my dash. it is still the stock one from the jeep. or could it be a bad altinator? thanks for the help.

I would trust the DMM over the voltage readout. But I would double check some wiring so your amps don't pop. I know how fast you can fry an amp on 18.3V.

Well I guess the good thing is, is that I don't have my system in for the winter
Do u think it would be a good idea to get an aftermarket read out

make sure your voltage regulator is wired properly.

a GOOD ground(preferable right to the batt), and Power preferably on a fused Wire right from the batt or even the alts charging post.

its really hard to say whether its a bad alt, regulator, or voltage gauge.

if it is a bad gauge it would likely do it with the truck on engine off with a charger.

Where would the ground be on the alt
All I seen was the Power and the factory plug in that I had to splice into

the ground for the alt is where its chassis mounts to the engine.

i meant all those connections to be for the regulator

So my volts stay at 14.7 now not sure what happened but it doesn't spike anymore I hooked up an after market voltage read out to my jeep and it reads between 14.7 to 14.9 between driving and at idle

While going through some old emails, I found where MechMan said that the "check guages" light would come on and stay on periodically. He said just trust the dmm and you should be fine. We hooked up a capacitor to the positive and ground running through the truck to where the amp should be and it stays steady around 14.90-15.10.

Would anyone know how to disconnect the guage on the cluster or the wire from the alt that runs to the cluster? Thanks ahead of time
