Default Mission Accomplished?

Today I installed a Deep Cycle Marine battery in my trunk and changed the 600W Kenwood that powered my subs to a 1550W Clarion. I ran 4 gauge between the batteries positives, grounded the rear battery to the body, and ran a 150A fused 1/0 to the Clarion. Subs are pounding a lot harder and dont seem to be dipping under 12V even with a small alt. I believe it was an overall success unless there's something I did wrong? I have quite a bit of 4 gauge left from the old system to do the big 3 with now, or should I do it with 1/0? Annd at what point is it necessary to use a high output alternator?

I'd say that over 2kw-ish is when a new alt is needed, but it all depends on voltage drop. Have you measured that yet?

Do the big 3 in 1/0

It doesn't go under 11.8 on big hits but I have a lot of gain setting and whatnot to do on the amp still before I can be sure how much drop I'll have. The Clarion manual says this amp is 1550W RMS and 1900W peak. CEA compliant. And I'm wondering about the alternator just because I've had so much trouble finding one that actually says itll fit.

Batteries are reservoirs for Power and alternators are the means to feed them. It's a bad example but think of it like water in a bucket (the battery) with a hose (the alternator) feeding them. The larger the hose, the faster they will fill. The more buckets you have the greater your reserve. As long as the amount going out of the buckets over any given time period is less than the amount going in, then you'll never run out of power.

Ok, well my alternator is only 75A, Tiny really.. Is there like an amp to watt conversion? How many watts you can run with so many amps or something? Im guessing it's time for a new alt.

Isnt it like 100 watts equal 10 amps? But in his case, it would be 155 amps? Correct me if im wrong someone cuz thats how i thought it was.

That's pretty much it.

You would need 150amps in excess of what your Car uses to run the amp directly off the alternator or a fair bit of AH from your batteries for the alt to dribble Power into them. Your car probably uses around 60mps at maximum draw, so you only have 15amps (or 150w) to feed the batteries. At some point the strain is gonna kill your alternator.

Ok, so time to go alternator shopping. My issue when looking in the past is that I could only find high output alternators for 1990 Town Cars and up, and I drive an '88. I wouldnt consider the 2 years a huge issue but 1990 is when the new generation started and the body style and everything changed. I cant find any alternators that say will go on an '88 Town Car..

Email Mechman, Quality power etc and ask them what the details of your alternator case are. They might have a direct fit or be able to custom one for you.

They make custom alt's, so that shouldnt be and issue or worry.
