Default High output alternator

What does a good 200amp alternator put out at idle? I've seen some that say they're 200 amp but they're only puttin out 85 to 105grab at idle which isnt more than my factory one is doing now. Any suggestions? Its for a 72 buick electra, will be running deck, visor screens, dvd player, mtx 81001 and mtx 1004. I need it all to Power up correctly and possibly another battery if needed.

Default Re: High output alternator

most alts are designed to do about 50-60 percent at idle. there a few that do more, dc makes one i know, that do 70-80 percent at idle. theres two ways to design them and its either a high peak amperage and low idle output, or higher idle output and lower peak. its just a design compromise that depends on the way they are wound. beyond that, i highly doubt that a factory alt is putting out 100 amps at idle. that alt is in the same boat as the others, probably doing 50 or so amps at idle

for my tc for example, dc Power offers one that does 130 idle/180 max or one that does 70 idle/320 max. you have to expect a compromise of either great idle, or great max

mechman offers two, a 165/270 and a 135/270 for 100 dollars cheaper.

just gotta read the specs. find something that does its peak power at a reasonable rpm(under 2500-3000) since that's the range youll be in for everyday driving

I got mine from PowerMax, it specs at 105 idle and 250 peak. Only problem I have with mine is the output voltage is also a little low at idle.

Default Re: High output alternator

Ok just looked up my factory, it's putting out 55amps . So now I definately need to replace this alternator as my current radio and single small amp is enough to kill the battery. So amp I looking for the peak output, I would like to aim for 4 to 5000 watts worth of equipment so how do I figure how many amps are needed for from my alternator. Will be doing a extra battery, i need info on size for this aswell. Also with the car being a 72', i'm doing the big 3 upgrade, but are there any other upgrades that you guys would recommend.

To figure your amperage requirements you need to take your total power output(rms) and divide by 14.4v, this will give you a baseline number. Than take into consideration that an amp may only be 80% efficient, i.e 5000w/14.4= 347 amps, 80%(347) 434 amps. This will tell you what your system will pull, than you need to add some amps for the car itself. You will probably want to have 50 amps on tap for the car, so to upgrade your charging system to meet 100% of the amperage requirements you would need around 485 amps. These numbers are just rough and you will never get there on a single alternator. A good 300 amp alternator and a couple of strong batteries will get you where you need to be.

its more like 12 to 13 volts because at full amperage draw your voltage will be quite low.
