Default Battery stuff

First off I'm sure this has been asked in other threads but figured my pictures and such will help those who come along in the future and may keep me from digging forever.

Ok trying to get a better understanding of this battery stuff. So any advice you can give is a huge help because I have a lot to try to understand. But first let me start with some pictures and maybe someone can help me go from there. Iíve seen stuff done different ways so Iím more just looking for clarification on best practice. And a few explanations of how things will work.

In my first pictures here Iím going to start with just the Power runs and we can add the grounds after we get the first done. Which of these is the idea way to run power if your using a different size front battery?

I like using buss bars personally. You can Build one for Power and one for ground, the benefit is that you give yourself additional terminals to connect amps, additional runs of power/ground and more batteries in the future.

So both ways are acceptable methods?

are you going to be listening to your stereo while the car off? if not then lose the relay and use 2 300 amp fuses 1 close to each battery

Its my understanding that if the front battery is different than the rear they will drain each other when the system is off???? No???

If it's a different TYPE of battery it's possible they will drain. Ie: Wet cell in front and AGM's in back. They also may charge at different rates, causing over or undercharging in one of the types.

No we were thinking a small kinetik up front and the HC2400's in back. Don't these need to have an isolator or relay between them or can they just be connected together?

Just replace the starting batt with like a skbt20 so they are all agms and you will be fine. And buss bars are win.

Yeah I've been reading for the last couple hours about this and most say mixing wet and agm is not a good idea but mixing difference size agm's isnt really a problem.

So then my next question, In a similar situation like above, all agm's should i have a run from my alt to the front battery and a run from my alt to the back battery(s)? Or from alt to front battery then from battery to back battery(s)?

In the pic should the purple line be there?

It's rather pointless. Wouldn't hurt but it's just another run in effect.

My thought is that if i run it without the purple wire I'm going to have to run 2 or more 0 gauge wires the length of each run because of the combined output of the 250 amp alt + the current from the front battery. Putting my current draw in excess of a 300 wire Or am I seeing this wrong? I would say the most logical way to do it would be to use the purple wire but not the wire connecting the front and alt. However this is already in place when I did my big 3 so disconnecting it seems pointless if it wont cause a problem.

I'm also curious about mixing the different capacities. If the front is a 70ah and my back 3 are each 128ah how does the front battery know when to stop charging? considering the back 3 still need more juice in theory?

A battery only pulls as much as it needs. The resistance on the smaller battery will be higher when the others are lower so naturally it will draw less than the other batts when the alt is charging. You don't need to worry about that.

Don't use the purple wire.. You are better sticking with ALT to front batt to back batt with as much wire as you can afford/are willing to run.

What does having the front battery in line with the purple line change. It would seem that the fully charged front battery would act as a resistor to the back. Some of this is new to me so please only take my questions as me working through my curiosities not as questioning your advice

the battery being fully charged will be no different than the batteries in the back. And having all the wire pass by the front battery will be easier to wire by a lot. You probably won't see a gain. But your way just seems like unnecessary work.

Really? I was thinking the purple wire to save me from trying to figure out how to make 6 connections to that single battery post on the front battery. Point to point runs just seemed easy I guess but I wasn't sure if that triangle shipped connection would be a problem

This is when big distro blocks come in handy

You can get those made though the toolmaker or project DB... or do it yourself with a drill and tap.
