Default 16V daily

So just want to get everyones thoughts on 16v daily. And yes I know I don't "NEED" to do 16v but if I can y the heck not?

My plan is to get a 16v alternator, a KHC16v for the front and a 16v bank in the back. To the amp it should be perfect+1 electrical. The KHC16v has a 12v post so all stock electrical would run off that???

hc16v's are only good for 10 amps off the 12v post.

you'll need at least 6 hc16v's with the 12v posts jumped together JUST to run your vehicle, not including any highs amps or anything.

for 16v in a non spl setup you either need a LOT of hc16v's, dual alternternatos with one of each dedicated for each system, or you need step down modules, which you'll get 30a continous out of each so at least 2 just for the Car then more if you're going to run big highs amps.

Good catch on the 10amp thing. I didnt know that. So 30 amps on the step downs... How dose that work for the starter

you have to have a 12v batt. i wouldn't trust trying to start through the step down. they can handle 50-60 amps peak, but thats not enough to start a car.

nobody really has posted it but the 10 amps thing is something i've learned through my own research(which involved 3 hc16v's being warrantied)

Do a dual alt set up, it's the easiest away to run 2 voltages.

I would disagree. A stepdown module with one battery is probably the best and easiest. So you get the full output out of two alternators but can still run your Car off the step down just fine.

If you do one 12v alt and one 16v a lot of that 12 is going to go to waste.

Out of curiosity, what happens if the step down fails? Does your car stop due to there being no supply of electricity or does it get 16v+ to the face?

pretty sure it would be jsut running off the 12 volt battery. I am sure xs would give a better answer though.

So you're not going to know until the battery goes flat?

one would hope if you have a stepdown you have multiple voltage meters But if not then yeah I would imagine so.

Default Re: 16V daily

when a step down fails you will be running off your 12v battery until it dies

however i wouldn't say a step down is any less reliable than an alternator.

however. you'd need about 3 step downs if you were going to run a car and around 300w to your mids/highs

http://store.soundsolutionsaudio.com...wn-module.html

step downs are 150 each, so you'd have 450 in just those.. which you could get a cheap 12v alt for 100$ that'll do 70-80 amps... just have to have room to mount it.

i personally am going the step down route as i'm going to be running a 16v highs amp and need all the alternator i can get on 16v.

Looks like I'm going to need to poke around under the hood a bit. Real shame on the 12v post thing. That looked to be one of those products that can really have an impact on the car audio industry (if it worked).

At this point I'm almost more fond of going the 2 alt path just because I still have the stock alt and If I'm going to sink $300+ into stepdowns I would rather put that to the 16v alt and end up with a stock alt and a 400+amp 16v. If I went with the stepdown path I would be using part of the output of that alt to power the car on top of spending the money on the stepdown.

My mind math estimates look like this.
2 alt path= $500 on alt + $100 for machining a custom bracket to attach it. Amp gets all 400+ amps.
1 alt + stepdown path= $500 on alt + $300+ on stepdowns, amp gets 75-100 less amps because of the car and mid/high amps so I'd spend another $250 on another battery

Just got to make the second alt fit...

Just run your mids/highs on the 16 volt system and you will only need 1 stepdown...

you don't know that he could get away with 1 step down. To do so it would have to be an older vehicle with very few electronics and the 12v battery would have to be kept in a good state of charge.

even xs power recommends 2 for just the vehicle.

even xs power recommends 2 for just the vehicle.

If I did the step downs I would would want at least 50amps so 2 would be fair, 3 if I did my mids/highs on it. 12voltz that looks like a good way to do it but seems you could have saved yourself some money if you just bought a 525ish 16v alt and left the stock 12 there too. Then no need for the step downs and your net 16v current would be about the same and the 12v would be plenty strong to run the car + mids or highs. And am curious what you did to get the second alt on there.

What vehicle do you have?
How much power do you want to run?
Will it be for driving at full alt output or parked demos at idle output?

2011 scion xb, 2AZ-FE engin which is shared with the TC so I figured someone would have tried this stuff by now . Not 100% on power yet but will likely be between 5-7k daily on a pair of Sundown NS. 90% driving so I've always thought bigger alts are the way to go. Less batteries in the long run.
