Default Alternator question

I am getting ready to install my 270 amp Mechman alt into my SUV and was wondering do i use 1/0 gauge Wire for the alt install? If its too big will 2 gauge wire work? I have an Infiniti OX56 SUV.

Default Re: Alternator question

um 1/0 is the minimum i would shoot for. not sure why u cant fit 1/0 but i would def go bigger than 2 unless the Wire is only like a ft long

Default Re: Alternator question

a 270a alt should have at least 2 1/0 Power and 2 1/0 ground wire going to it. i have 2 2/0 welding wire power and 2 2/0 ground going to my 270a.

Default Re: Alternator question

270A would be at least 1 run of 1/0 OFC. Dont use CCA for this application. True 1/0 ofc will be rated around 300 amps max over 20 ft. It could do a little more at a lesser distance, which is what you are working with. So you could get away with just 1. "2" 1/0 connections would be idea so that the cable isn't operating close to its max. There shouldn't be any reason you cant use 2 or even more connections with that alternator.

Hmm. if you have a gallon of water and use a tiny drink straw, you will only get a tiny drink straw full of water.. Use a Mc Donalds straw and you'll get a Mc Donalds straw full of water........

My question is basically how should I do my 0 gauge runs front to back since I don't have them on the negative side right now. I have 2 runs positive front to back but nothing for grounds.

Default Re: Alternator question

You've got 2 2500wrms amps that are trying to draw a combined amperage of about 400-500amp. You have 2 3100 batteries that sit at about 12.8volts and an alternator that runs your entire electrical system at 14v but can only support a 270amp draw. At any given time the vehicle is going to require 60-100 of that draw. So your amps will pull down the voltage to the batteries resting voltage at which point they will take up the load. Unless you're seeing voltage drop significantly below 12v, I wouldn't worry.

from alt to front battery, from front battery to back batteries, from back batteries to amps. I also suggest an equal number of negative runs.

Agreed on the negative runs. Being your vehicle is basically Japanese, it's probably gonna be a monocoque chassis which are horrendous for conducting electricity.
