anything true 4 guage and up.....most use 1/0 cuz it never has to be upgraded....i have seen 4/0 for big 3....but i think thats a lil overkill unless your running a 600v electrical system

The bigger the better. 4 or 2 gauge would suffice, it's better than stock. But if you're gonna go to the bother of doing it you might as well use 1/0awg.

Use a piece of string or something like that as a mock up and that will give you a idea on the amount of Wire needed

Default Re: Big 3

I did the BIG 9 on mine... at least I THINK that was the number lol!... anywho, I just used cheap Audiopipe 0-awg and some 0-awg welding copper lugs, sanded everything metal to metal (yes even the Wire and lugs to remove any contaminants), seal up the ends and call it a day. Took me a few hours but I also REPLACED my stock wires and added a 2nd batt under hood.
Pic below was midway through the install but I can for sure say it made a HUGE difference.

I went a little overkill and did the following since I had 50' (25' of red and 25' silver):

1st Batt (+) to Alt (+)
1st Batt (+) to 2nd Batt (+)
1st Batt (-) to Frame
1st Batt (-) to Body
1st Batt (-) to 2nd Batt (-)

Alt Mount (-) to Frame as well.

2nd Batt (+) to Fuse/Relay Center (+)
2nd Batt (-) to Body... used Relay Center mounting bracket to kill 2 birds with one wire lol!
2nd Batt (-) to Frame

I was thinking about grounding rear body to frame as well... ah hell, might as well and call it Big 10... will have to do that this week now

I hate to get people's panties in a bunch for bumping an old thread but I have read all 5 pages and a couple of my original questions were answered but I am about to do this and I would like to know slightly more:

1. My Chevy Cobalt battery is in the trunk factory, I saw mention of a block to battery ground. Is it really a necessity? I don't think I have enough wire if it is...

2. Assuming # 1 is answered with a no is there any benefit to doing this to a car with no system that would be primarily tracked(would it help with the overall electrical and ignition system?)? My RX7 is slowly turning into an autocross car and was wondering if there was any benefit...

3. I see people fusing and not fusing, have even checked other forums... Is it necessary or not? Since I may need to find a hole in the firewall on the Cobalt and grommet it I am thinking it is a possibility...

As far as upgrading the wiring for a track car. I really don't think it will net you much of anything (performance wise) but it wouldn't hurt to try.
