Default AD review

I would like to post up some thoughts that I have about Alpha Damp and possibly some useful hints that can be used to help the application process faster... I will tell you ahead of time that I don't have much experience with other brands so can't fairly compare this product against others... To be unbiased about this product I will keep away from this...

First off I want to say shipping is extremely fast from DIYMA.com...

I won't go into to much of this as it has been shown in many reviews that the thickness of the foil is noticeably different as proven to be... The silver foil finish is also nice as well... I did notice on a few sheets that the adhesive would separate from the foil in spots but it wasn't hard to remedy this issue

AD claims that only a fraction of alpha damp can cover the Car with the same results of more of another product... I feel confident in saying that this is true if you strictly follow and believe in the 25% rule...

With the thicker foil it was extremely hard to cut to shape so the idea to use a paper cutter came to my friends mind and I can say it was extremely easy to cut with it... Not only that but it cut down on the sharp edges cutting with tin snips

Also it is harder to form to non flat sheets of sheet metal... Not impossible but a nice round screw driver will help out a lot with forming AD to the curves... Also leaving the sheets out in the sun help out as well...

I was nice enough to give my friend 4 sheets of this to do his doors, I will let him review it more in depth but the result was amazing...

Final thoughts:

AD is defiantly worth every single penny as from seeing it used on my friends car and what little bit I did, you would use way less of AD over damplifier not only will this save you money in the long run but will perform better efficiently as well...

Overall 4 out of 5

Default Re: AD review

Nothing impressive as I didn't use much at this point, I do have other plans for it so there will be more pic in the future... Its just unfortunate that I didn't have much to do atm

Laying pieces out to figure best coverage area, as you can see there is actually a lot of the crappy stock deadener:

Forgot but with the foil finish it was very nice to actually lay out lines on the product to optimize the sheet...

Here is a shot of everything down... muffler is on the right so extra deadener was used to eliminate as much from that as possible...

Is this something I can tell a huge difference in, no but I will use a two sheets to finish off my rear quarter panel and then probably sell the rest to my friend... ATM I don't feel it necessary to do the interior... Friend needs it for his tin can

Nice review but you shouldn't have applied it on top of the factory deadener. That's the last place you should typically cover.

I need to get on my review. I cut it fine with regular scissors.

It was probably what I used but that paper cutter cut it like butter...

I know, about 75% of the bottom of the trunk was that crappy factory deadener... I wasn't about to scrap that crap off... a few of the open areas (the area right in front of the pic) is extremely solid and along the curved sides... I was mainly focused on the right side where the muffler is... Surprisingly that trunk was fairly dead other then the spare tire well... I did do a tap test and the deadener helped even with it over the stock... The most efficient way, no

Really for that application spectrum would have done fine... Not to much noise came from the rear other then bass

I can probably through some on the firewall to kill some vibrations maybe some road noise...

I wasn't implying you can't apply in to the factory stuff. Just do it last since its already there haha.

I wouldn't try to remove it either.

lol I wasn't taking it that way... were the spots I needed to hit there was already 90% coverage anyway...

As sound damper is designed mostly to change the inherent resonant frequency of a given panel of metal, you shouldnt need to form it or bend it on differnt shaped pieces of metal... since where the metal is curved or not flat wont be nearly as resonant as the larger flat pieces of sheet metal. This is why you can get away with only covering 10% of the panels.

Generally that was the idea going into the trunk (I went with 20-25% coverage)... Before I placed the AD down I tested area's with a screwdrivers handle to listen for areas that need it and as you can see some AD went to the curved area... Tested again after and it helped a lot compared to before... Really other then the rear part of my rear quarter panels everywhere else was fairly curved...

But yes your right curved areas don't generally need deadener... Its a good idea to test though

Default Re: AD review

Well I would have posted in here sooner but I was on vacation in WV (no internet )

Like Beckerson said he gave me 4 sheets to do my doors and it made a huge difference. 2 sheets on each door was good enough for about 25% coverage on the outside panel and 15% on the inside. It brought out midbass that I didn't know my Hifonics were capable of and improved the clarity a ton. My door panels are fairly flat and I had a big problem with them flexing from the sub. It was about an inch of flex before the damping and its been reduced to maybe 1/4" - 3/8". So a huge difference there.

The only other deadener I have experience with is damplifier so I will only be comparing to that. The AD is both easier and harder to work with than the damplifier. The extra thickness does make it a bit harder to cut but with the proper tools it is still quite easy. The thickness also makes it harder to form to curved areas but as Beckerson said its not too hard to press it down with a screwdriver handle or the like. Another thing I noticed was that the AD holds its shape much better than the damplifier when trying to install it. We did beckersons doors with the damplifier in the middle of winter and it had a flimsy feel to it. The AD held its shape perfectly even in the 80 degree weather here which made it a lot less frustrating to install.

Beckerson will be able to do a better review when we get around to doing his rear quarter panels which have the most amount of flex. Should be soon

lol ya... actually most my noise I get is from all the plastic inside the vehicle... That and my antenna for my alarm... Darn thing vibrates on the windshield... will have to see if some felt will kill that...

I don't really think I said anything about this but we added AD to my door panel as well which granted wasn't a hole lot but has helped a lot with buzzing sounds I would get... Overall a very solid door now
