Yeah, in your example, if you're hitting 40 volts, you're clipping.

search button.1`!~>!~!~>[email protected]# fTW~ someone posted a chart on how much to set gains with a volt chart and everything

Gebrochen 07-23-2008 10:11 PM

I read it.. and read it again... call me stupid if I'm wrong. If 40V is your max voltage, any time you're hitting that, you're going into clipping. Maybe I'm not understanding your question. The second part about 30V and 225W seems obvious as long as drum beats or heavy bass lines were not hitting up to the 40V level.

Take your hands off the keyboard.
Pack your steam roller.

Holy crap you know what a steamroller is? lol theats great

In the past, I've used an o-scope, but it's the same thing... so you're correct. Using a clamp meter is more relevant to setting the right wattage for your sub. You can't assume that the nominal DCR measurement applies at all frequencies.

you would do this using a 50-60 hz test tone

You still need a clamp meter for this, because you don't know the impedance at 50-60Hz. So, you can't calculate the wattage going to the sub. In this case, we're talking about proper power to a sub, and not max power of the amp.

Gebrochen 07-23-2008 11:30 PM

Two different goals...
1) driving your amp to the max without clipping ... so, don't exceed max voltage.
2) pick a frequency to clamp your sub to power it to it's limit.

setting the gain is part of either goal.
