I still say you need to wait until you have a Car and are driving before you buy more than your two 12's you have now. Seriously, you say all this now, but there's a reason all of us on this site aren't running 160db walls. Besides the cost, it's nice having a semi-practical vehicle lol.

No, WAY! I want bass now. And 2 of these alone aint gonna cut it. I need all 4 of these subs things. I will get all the proper electrical to power it all too. Trust me. This system should be fully running by the end of this summer. Maybe sooner if im lucky.

Default Re: L-K-W-B's Build Log

Let me explain. If you go with a compound isobarik pair, then your enclosure volume requirements will be halved. So instead of needing 6 cu ft for 4 subs, you would need about 1.5 cu ft. (since running 2 needs about 3 cu ft, and half of that is now 1.5) That sai'd the 6 cu ft people are throwing around is verrrrrrry generous. For these subs to actually perform they need even more space. They have weak motors and need quite a bit of volume.

Now there are drawbacks. You're essentially using air to attach the two motors to one cone. so you now have half as many radiating surfaces. So the efficiency vs the 4 in 6 cu ft is half.

However don't look at it that way, you can't fit 4 normally anyways.
Look at it this way. Now you have essentially 2 subs with twice the motor strength and power handling.

Isobaric enclosure (Compound enclosure)

Check that out.

Anyways it's not commonly used. It's more from back in the day when most subs had weak-assed motors.

It'll be a more complex box for sure, but at least you could use all your subs without walling off your vehicle.

EDIT:

That link has isobaric sealed boxes, but you can also do ported. The main thing is you're coupling the two motors to one radiating surface

yeah....8 cubes doesnt sound right. sounds like a gross number to me

just real rough guess off of the video, you can figure about 27-28 deep, 32-34 across, 15-16 tall... gives 7.25 using the max of those dimensions. take out .4 cubes for drivers...then take out the port displacement...thats barely 6 cubes. i doubt the dimensions are much bigger than that

:P it kinda is like you just have 2 12s at that point.

Ok so if you're using HFi's or HFx do 4 cu ft tuned to 34Hz.
Use 2 4" aeroports and you should be good. Make the straight section 12.75" long.

Truthfully these subs are still wanting a bigger enclosure, but their mechanical power handling will be compromised if we do that.

The common chamber volume between the subs isn't too important. Just make sure there is enough clearance so that the cone of the the one speaker doesn't hit the other speakers motor.(or if you have the motors facing each other make sure they don't touch.)

Also make sure you wire the subs right. They need to all move in the same direction together.

Wiring them backwards is like wiring your coils out of phase...

Anyways with this setup you should be good mechanically and thermally for about 1kWRMS.

I was told the hfx's have slightly more motor force for a smaller box . The hfis really needed a big box to shine. And something about ferrite quality.

Yep it's true:

HFx (Bl^2)/Re=16*16/8.676=29.5
HFi (BL^2)/Re=13.92*13.92/8.88=21.5 (nvm manual is wrong, it's 15.25*15.25/8.88=26.2 which is a lot closer to the HFx)

But they still need a big ole box. Vas is still up around 90l and ebp is only 42.6, which is low and indicates a sealed box.

Anywho I used the HFx when I modeled the compound isobarik box.

With HFis I would go with the full 17"length on the 4"ports to bring the tuning down. It's got a mighty peak up around 50Hz(even though it's tuned to about 30Hz like this). It's because the box is too small.

Get this, for a butterworth response it needs 14 cu ft or so for the compound pair. Anywho you can tell these things are meant for sealed boxes, the Qes is like .7.

I believe you will have better low end output with double the motor force.

Well then I believe the best option would be 2-3 ported.. 3 would be optimal.

14 cubes
