The continuing drama of the Explorer.....
So did a fuel pressure test, no leak down, no clue where the gas came from. I gave it a fresh fill of Valvoline Max Life and a new filter. Also went through the nightmare of changing the plugs (on this truck, changing plugs requires jacking it up, removing the passenger wheel and inner fender, removing part of the emissions crap, removing the transmission dipstick tube, then you still need swivels and extensions to get to the plugs) and wires. One of the plug wires had a hole burnt through it, causing it to arc off the side of the block (a ticking previously attributed to valve train noise)
Now the cats are clogged and causing the truck to bog down and surge, also since doing the tune up, it runs so much quieter, new noises have surfaced.
Now I can hear...the dreaded explorer timing chain rattle......NOOOOOOOOOOO
SO im going to baby it until I can pull the motor and redo all the timing chain guides and tensioners.

Every time I get some money set aside to work on my build, it decides to have mechanical issues......

Default Re: Back in the game ~Build Thread~

Truck is running well (minus a bit of surging from clogged cat's), and oil has stopped leaking, I think we are in the clear..... now on to more enjoyable things.

I have acquired a PPI Pro-MOS 450 that I am going to put to work driving my subs, ill am happy to be bringing this old school monster back out of the pasture, and putting it back to work doing what it does best..... seems to be a theme in this build.....

So here is where we stand for gear so far:
Head Unit: Alpine CDA-7863
Front End Amp: Coustic AMP-268 (wish I could find the manual)
Sub Amp: Precision Power Pro-MOS 450
Subs: 2x Pioneer TS-w2502d4
Components: Bravox CS57CF (I may be ordering a second pair of these)

Other items on hand:
Solid brass marine grade battery terminals
25' of FA 2/0 power cable
Roll of rg-56 for making my interconnects (I also have some FA RCA's I may end up using instead)
Giant roll of rubber hardwood floor underlayment to use as experimental sound deadening

Shopping list:
2/0 Lugs
8 AWG ring terminals
2 four terminal bus bars (for power and ground)
ANL fuse holder and 300 amp fuses
2 maxi fuse holders and 35 amp fuses (for the PPI amp)
machine screws, washers, and nuts to make binding posts on enclosure
2-3 sheets 3/4 MDF and roll of charcoal carpet

I am trying to decide how to do my interconnects.
The head unit has 2 pre-amp outs one "Front" and one that switchable between "Rear" and "Sub" (they are 5v according to the owners manual), it has a built in crossover for the pre-amp outs (can be disabled)
The Coustic amp has a really nice built in crossover, with an adjustable level line out (If you set your front channels to high pass, than the line out is low pass)
The PPI of course has no crossover.

Should I,
A. Feed the front channel pre to the Coustic amp (It has a parallel switch that runs all 4 channels of a single input) then set the other out to "Sub" and y split it to the 4 channels on the PPI. In this instance I would set the Coustic crossover into fill range, and just use the built in processor in the head unit.
B. Feed front and rear to the Coustic (turning off the head units internal crossover), then feed the PPI with a y off of the low pass line out on the Coustic amp.
C. Buy a nice old school crossover to run it all

Option a gives me more control over the crossover from the drivers seat, option b makes use of that famous Coustic crossover, and option C costs me more money...lol...

Anyways, what do you guys think?

So.......BIG CHANGE

I added the largest thing yet to the build......
..
..
..
..
..
..
an entirely different vehicle!!

My wife has been asking for a van for a while now, so I went out and got her a Chrysler T&C for her birthday.
So I'm putting the Explorer out to pasture, and will be taking her 2003 Escape (A few less miles than mine, but much better overall condition)

I am going to have to rethink my enclosure a bit, as my big horn wont fit in the rear cargo area (well unless I put it with the mouth of the horn pointing up).

My subs are designed for use in a very low volume sealed enclosure, and the horn design I chose took that into account......maybe a 4th order will do the trick, maybe a different horn design, maybe a TL? Not sure yet.......

Anyhoo, here she is!
