Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Well to start off my introduction into car audio started years ago... I grew up with Acoustic Research, Audiobahn, MA Audio(pre-buyout) and Fosgate.

Then I got a Cobalt LS in 06 and fell into a typical American style of caring for nothing but,"those ten seconds or less." After coming to the conclusion of being in quite a few faster cars and sinking over 6k into it for preparation for stupid power and no drivability I got bored with it and discovered that car's don't always have to make left turns... About 1k later in new and used suspension parts it can turn like a dream but it is still lacking something. Up until about 2 years ago I had forgotten how nice it is to make loud noises without having to empty the gas tank. Unfortunately I was reborn into the Fayetteville NC Car Audio scene... Mostly consisting of SMD fanboys, Boss 5k's, Pyle 18's, and Pyramids as far as the eye can see... I happened to come across a shop that, although was a pawn shop, actually knew something about car audio and bought a pair of Fosgate 6x9's to replace my blown rears. I dug my old MA80xe's out of the closet and started on a search for a decent amp and box... At the time I didn't have access to the tools I would need to build a box and honestly didn't know the first thing about them but was not about to buy a $150 box from any of the local shops for some $50 subs. A year or so later I happened to come across a pair of sealed .35^ft single truck boxes and said f it and got them. Now on to an amp... Needs to be 1 ohm stable and around 250wrms... A few months later I decided to go back to the pawn shop and in a display case there was a MINTY RF PBR300.1 for $120. Mine.

Found the manual on RF's website and wired it up to one ohm... 2 5 year old subs in two trashy prefabs on 300wrms hitting 129.6. Rolling now! Still blown front stage but f it. Started researching and joined SMD where I conversed with Kevin of Skar Audio. They were just about to release their MA-8 line and with my infatuation with small subs and my buddy coming into some money and offering to loan me I got two of them. They came in and we build a 1^ft ported to 45htz. Because these were 2 ohm DVC instead of 4 ohm DVC we decided to wire them to 2 ohms and on 150 rms of the teensy PBR I hit 131.1.

Life caught up with me and I had to miss some great opportunities due to my car going down twice in a month and I was getting discouraged, though events today I think I am back on track...

Current build list for those who don't care to read above:
Rockford Fosgate 6x9's
Rockford Fosgate PBR300.1
(2)Skar Audio MA-8
Custom 1^ft ported enclosure

Have yet to install(just came in today!!!):
Rockford Fosgate Power Series 6.5's
Shuriken 850amp Battery

Future Plans:
MA Audio HK401sx
or
Audiobahn A16000J

Big 3
and more...

Couple pics...
Battery just shipped in and Picked up a set of 6.5's from the pawn shop... Pretty good condition, looks 6.5/10 sound 10/10:

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Update... Got my 1/0(25 ft OFC welding wire rated at 600V 25 ft length 300A), Lug Connectors, and some other stuff... Now whenever I get time(and can get another hand) I will be installing the 1/0 for my BIG 3, 2004 RF Power Ti 6.5's up front, Re-installing my PBR300.1 and MA-8's, and my Shuruken BT20... Then I will be looking for POWA! and hopefully building a 6th order with a sealed off trunk with the ports firing directly into the cabin... Depending on power levels I am shooting for a 140 on my buddy's termlab. They say doubling power or cone area adds 3db which would mean I only need about 450wrms to hit 140.1(assuming everything does it by exactly 3db... Also with a box which will hit harder and smaller cf with the trunk sealed... should be there.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

so your running two different subs?. Hope the box isn't a common chamber.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

The whole 3db thing is for perfect world scenarios but it sounds like you are on the right track.

I think that he said he installed the MA 8's so I think he's running the same unless he's running 3 subs.

Thanks for the reassurance!

Nah, I am running the MA-8's now. I was running the MA80xe's for a while on my home theatre then threw them in the car when I got the PBR300.1, then got the MA-8's. It is a common chamber 1CF tuned pretty high... It is currently a little more than a one note wonder but volume maxed on bass I love you still couldn't bottom out the subs... Although we put them in my buddies car so I could see how they handled a little more power(600rms) and they ended up cracking my double baffle(3/4 x 2)...

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

I know I already have pics of some of this stuff but here is the install list and I am shooting for sunday:

25 ft 1/0 OFC wire, 2 1 ft sections of 2/0 wire, 1/0 heat shrink, 1/0 lugs, Shruken BT-20, Poly-netting for various accents, 2004 RF T1 6.5", 10G power wire for speaker wire, and that is it for now...

I am sorry about the crappy pics but to make a long story short my wife broke my gopro so all I have now is a 4 year old camera phone...

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Bat is installed and cables modded. Tomorrow door speakers will go in(with ****ty cell pics) and possibly the big three will be started. After bat cables for big three are done subs and amp going back in. Christmas I am apparently getting car audio goodies and will be installing those with "how-to style" documentation(again, with ****ty cell pics).

Hopefully soon I can start on my 6th order project.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

6.5's in the doors! I so missed my front stage, still need to adjust the one on the passenger side though. Got a couple pics, unfortunately to get them in I had to cut the oem speaker out because it is built into the teardrop mount but the only hard part was getting the damn window crank clip off because they decided to make the crank base piece mold around it...

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

New amp going in, Audiobahn A275HCT. Bought it used(obviously) and all but the side LED's work. All Pot's work, All terminals work, even the output meters...
Will try to get pics up tonight.

Jesus Christ. I have seen better pictures taken from a potato.

Are you sure that thing is only 4 years old?

Haha, yeah I am a termite technician and take my phone under houses with me in case of emergencies. It is a bit more than a little banged up. No point in getting some new fancy phone since I will probably break it every few days.

Get an otter case, get a new phone, problem solved ;)

I rocked rockford speakers way back. I liked them.

Hell yeah bro, I am definitely a fan of RF but I don't have RF money and they don't support those of us who want ignorant SPL from tiny speakers(like my 8's or even American Bass 6.5's).

You trying to pay for it? My money goes to bills then family and if I have any left over I will either save it or buy something for myself which is usually something to make my car even more offensive to your average motorist.

Depending on local sales/auctions they can be dirt cheap. Aunt bought a simple P&S digital camera for $5. Takes decent pictures...

Anyway bills and family are important

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

I know, wifey has a pretty decent Kodak but I don't feel like putting up with it since it usually spends more time lost than being used. It also doesn't do anything for close ups or video.

As a side note got the Audiobahn in and Skars back in, ran a headphone jack-rca converter on the input side to test them out and worked pretty damn good with all gains down and ssf off it still hit pretty well of the Ipod, ran it to my LOC and barely audible... I was pissed, after redoing my connections to the LOC it still didn't hit for sh*t. After adjusting the LOC it started beating! I clamped it with all gains down I got right around 200WRMS on White Clouds with the head neutral and the amp all down. Not bad for 2 ohms on a A275 from 2004.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Small update, found a mint Rockford Fosgate .50F cap at a local pawn shop for $20 new old stock still in original packaging. I know they don't really do anything but stress additional electronics but I am thinking of throwing it in for giggles. Still haven't done the big three yet, seems like I have no time and when I do have time I am working on or driving my drift RC car. Now I am trying to buy a house so this build is currently postponed for a while...

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Well unfortunately this build may be over before it even got good...

Explanation from my facebook posts:
Quote:

So i got hit by two cars when leaving work today... IMO the Cobalt may be dead... Mentally tallying up everything to fix it and it is very near the 70% totaled cost for most insurances.... Had that car for 7 years of my life. I can't even bull****, I cried... several times. All because one jackass had to run a light.
Quote:

Yeah, had the green as did the car oncoming, I was attempting to turn left onto Grove Street and the oncoming car was coming straight, I eased forward waiting on him to take his sweet ass time... I see movement to my left and this moron with a jeep is coming straight at my driver's door around 45mph.I slam on the horn and yell "FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK !" and in slow motion the jeep runs the light, clips the oncoming car, slams into my passenger quarter and the oncoming car hits me in my front fender/headlight/bumper/wheel/suspension...
Quote:

If it wasn't for the oncoming car not paying attention I would probably not be here typing. He was coming straight for me... The next time anyone would have seen me would either at the hospital or in a box and I know when it is our time there is no point to fight it but God was looking out for me.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Dude thatd nothing. I seriously doubt its totaled.

Slobalt7 02-17-2013 09:43 AM

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

The insurance company hasn't taken a look at it yet but they said because it is more than 7 years old and it seems the whole drivers side would generally need to be replaced they would "probably" just total it out.

Also mechanically the front subframe is bent, along with the strut and the upper strut tower. Hard to tell but with the steering wheel straight that front wheel has ~10* camber.

97_eldo 02-17-2013 12:01 PM

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

sorry to hear that.
it's dependent on sub-frame and suspension damage.
the body stuff doesn't look that bad. you can't be looking for the top price shops to get it fixed tho cause that would likely end up being a write off. it's a dirty game the bodywork business, some places give ya quality at a decent price but there are those that charge quality prices for cheap unsafe work.
glad to hear that you made it thru ok and good luck with the rest of this journey.

take care and have fun.

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

My buddy who owns D&D Customs of Red Springs NC quoted me $3400 to get it all fixed, now I am just waiting on the damn claim adjuster.

Slobalt7 02-22-2013 09:01 PM

Re: Slobalt7's Log, coming out slow and painfully.

Adjuster talked to my buddy and they agreed on 3800... and he is going to repaint the whole car so IDK what colors I should go with, I wanna go two tone...
