Standard Cab s10 Build
I picked up this S10 for a winter beater/daily driver. I wanted an extended cab, but this saved me a lot of money on bass haha.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...3d863e752522d9 It has an old pionner head unit with only radio and cd, so that had to go. I picked up a pioneer 9600 whatever model. Very similar to my 80prs, but without all the awesome audio features. It actually has hd radio and a better pandora app than the 80prs. https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...77defc350c168f The truck had stock speakers, so i picked up some garbage coax sets. I tried to keep this as budget as possible, so I just wanted something better than stock. they were 55 bucks for all 4, so I could care less haha. 6.5s in the doors, and 4x6 in the dash. I was going to do a component set with the tweeters in the dash, but if I went that route I would have spent a lot more money on a good set. https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...54&oe=54D1550B Random shot with everything ripped out/wiring up the HU https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...b02b3892992017 For the sub stage I wanted something clean and simple. I had VERY little room to work with, as I am 6'2" and this is a tiny truck. The sundown 6.5sw was just released, so I picked one up. https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...07e0578f67d9b5 Next to the garbage coax https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...e59aa7e247499c To keep everything clean, I mounted the amps inside the jack cover. The pictures are mid way through wiring. 400x1 to the sub, and 60x4 to the coax. There is a lot of airspace around them, and the trim opens up on the side. We will see if heat becomes an issue. I can always mount a fan in the future https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...37f163a8bda753 https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...668f6230db506c Once I got the amps all wired in, I started on the box. I was extremely limited with space, and this was the best I could do. It came out to .37 cubes net @35hz with 14.5 in2 of port/cube Im just going to post the random shots. It's not perfect, but im happy with how it turned out. mocked up with port spacers https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...3bd776f6ce5a36 https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...e0&oe=54A431D0 sub set in to double check clearances. It's a tight fit https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...de&oe=5496187C https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...de&oe=5486C3AC Checked for truck clearances... https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.n...17f79c58309f28 https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...7b43bf62b1f1a5 |
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Had to notch for the terminal posts. Such a tiny little guy!
https://scontent-b-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...73&oe=548EB717 Finished the port with some corner round. If I made the box with the top inset so it was all flush, the cutout hole would be sketchy close to the edges https://scontent-a-lga.xx.fbcdn.net/...3b&oe=54A3C6B8 all buttoned up https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...0c96611aed2f6b I had originally wanted the port on the drivers side, but after testing it sounded way better flipped. I might fill the hole for the wire and move it since it is out in the open now. I also realized that I forgot to run the gain knob wire, so it is temporarily run through the seat (black wire in the pic) https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...443595c264ff4c For the space I had to work with, I am very happy with how everything turned out. I plan on bedlinering the box black, so it should be next to invisible back there. |
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Hell yea bro good job...got to have tunes!
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Nice work again man... And by the way, I finally got that other crescendo I got strapped and all I can say is wow! They are strapped at half ohm to boot so as I'm sure you would know they are putting out a impressive amount of Powa!!! I actually think it's too much being it's gonna start breaking my new truck haha
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
And by the way I knew you Wernt gonna go systemless for long you can't just quit cold turkey ya know!! Lol
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Im glad it went to a good home!
And it's no 18, but it does the job haha. 6.5" on 17% the power was a bit underwhelming at first, but it really does hammer, consodering. |

Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
My old setup in my other car was an hdc318 on the bc2000d I sold to southern haha. Im just saying going from that to this was a little sad. I was laughing because both amps, 4 speakers, the wiring and install parts were all cheaper than the front components I have in my other car now. Only paid 1800 for the truck so I didnt want to overdo it. The hu amd sub/amps are easy enough to pull if anything were to happen, so I got nicer stuff, but I didnt want to deal with pulling nicer speakers if the time came.
and im taking it easy on the little guy for now |
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
O I understand bro...maybe a blowthrew in future?
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
the bed and cab are in too nice of shape to go blow through. I want this turd to hold up as a DD for as long as it can.
I'm just pumped because now my other ride can finally get on the juice for the rest of the season. I got the passenger door all buttoned up. I still need to wrap the seat belt reel in fatmat, as that seems to be the only source of rattles at the moment. https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...d78c43c657d986 https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n...102de4ee1efbc8 I was going to take a video today, but it was already too dark out. While I had the seat forward, I made a depressing discovery. There is a horrid port noise on punchy notes. Mainly punches mixed in the long lows. You dont hear it with the seat back, but it is going to bug the **** out of me now. I'm considering trying to get the top off the box off and putting a baffle in above the port to reduce the volume. Right now the net volume is around .37cuft with 14.25 sqin per foot @35.5hz. Sundown recommends .3-.35 volume and 35-40 tuning. if I put the baffle in, I should be at a net .34 cuft with 15.5 sqin of port @37hz. I messed with dimensions forever, but the .37 with 14.25 was the best I could come up with considering my space limitations. I have no idea why I didn't think to add a baffle. Rookie mistake I guess. Everything is wood glued together except the top. The top is liquid nails, which is supposed to remain somewhat flexible. I'm hoping I can at least get it to stretch enough to run a razor under it. This is what I'm talking about if you can't picture it https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...54745608_o.jpg |
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Just curious does it sound like a subwoofer is in there or does it sound like a lot of good like midbass just curious on how a sub that size sounds.
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Its actually really gnarly for the size on 400 nominal watts. Hammers the lows like the 18, just obviously not as violently
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
And I got the top off. Cutting a baffle now
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
That's sweet man. You have any 6.5s u want to sell??
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
And yeah man sundown makes sic products I love my zss they get down on almost 5 k now that I got both endos at half ohm on them and I bet that lil sundown setup u got sounds really clean don't it
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Also wanted to ask real quick what is the frequency response of that sub if you happen to know?
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
I have a set of 6.5 components, but the surround on one woofer is torn. they are the normal RE 6.5's
I got the box apart and double checked the math. Without the sub, I have .37 cubes. torres says .41. I swapped the port dimensions (exchanged the w and h) as explained in the OP, and i got torres to come out to .37 before displacement (same as my physical measurements). That puts me at .33 net @ 37hz with 15.9sqin port per cube. So after verifying the math, my current unaltered box is [email protected] with just under 16 sqin per cube. which is right in the middle of sundowns specs. So now I'm stuck with the port noise for this box.... |

Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Well as u stated above the audible port noise that you don't like is only audible when your seat is in the forward position, thus unless you can manage to drive it like that lil you won't hear it anyway. But I assume your like me and just knowing that it is there is enough to drive you a littly insane!
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
exactly. I didnt notice it before, but now that I know... its going to drive me nuts. Plus I just ripped the box apart for nothing haha. at least I verified the math now
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Well now you get to make the box smaller!...lol
|
Re: Standard Cab s10 Build
Can I make the truck bigger? I actually cant complain. This thing is insane for a "door speaker" haha
