I have been having some issues building a decent box because of the lack of trunk room or a decently shaped trunk to be perfectly honest. All the boxes I have built have taken into account the woofer for displacement. What is the difference between regular mounting vs having the magnet portion on the outside of the box? Will it sound different if the box is built to specifications? Will it move less air or something?

just dont factor in the subs volume displacement… mostly everything is everythang besides that…

It won't sound different? Less air movement? I just want to make sure so that I don't mess up and so that it doesn't sound different.

Okay so here is a pro and con.. You have the same size box, and with the displacement of the Speaker outside of the equation, you basically get more box. Now, the con is the fact that if the sub isn't put together well you will get motor noise and it will sound crappy.. Also, if tinsel leads slap for some reason on your sub then you will most likely be annoyed that you can hear that too.. Just make a box that is right for your sub the conventional way, then try it with the magnet out and you will get maybe a... 3hz lower tuning? it will be enough to notice on paper but probably not enough for you to know of unless you hear tinsel leads slapping against the cone... not a pretty sound..

it wont change the output in any way at all.. the only thing that changes is the displacement.. since the woofer isnt in the box in anymore, it goes back to the displacement it was before the woofer was in it.

i have my orion ran inverse mounted and i didnt notice a difference it did make a difference in the prefab it its was in

it sounded a lil louder inverse but that was because of the extra room

but i have not herd a difference yet and you really cant hear the motor noise but tinsel leads slaping is annoying but i had that even when it was mounted regualarly

actually you would ggain a VERY small amount of space depending on how much curvature is in the cone since it will be domed towards the outside of the box

if I were to invert my sub it would change the volume from 4 to 4.7 according to LA's sub displacemnt spec, idk if the single layered non braced box can hold it.

Would it be safe to run a 12" Type R inversed completely upside down?

It seems like a pretty sturdy subwoofer.. How audible is tinsil noise? And would motor noise likely be a problem?

I'm interested because I made my box 1.96ft^3 before displacement, and I wish I went bigger.. The bit of extra room may help.

Does anyone know the displacement of a 12" Type R??

Sorry I don't know the displacement.. And yes it will be perfectly fine to run one inverted. If there is tinsil noise and motor noise, you will know it and it will eventually get annoying.. Don't run them very loud and the motor noise isn't bad, also you can bend the tinsils enough that they don't slap but too much and they may break so be careful. Yeah, i'll guess you can get a good .03^3 out of the box if you run the sub inverted but I won't make a promise there because like I stated I don't know the displacement of a Type R but I will promise you it will give you just about all of your 1.96^3 back if not a bit more due to the dome shape as someone else stated.. you may get 1.99^3 out of it in the end.

if you have a small box then inverting the sub may make a little difference. i used to have (2) 10" P1's in a cheapy small box and when i inverted them they were a tad louder, but mainly it seemed like they went lower, and moved a little more air than before. but it was probly b/c of how small the box was
