Default Spl?

If you go from 100 db's to 110 db's, is it 10% louder? Or is really like 10x louder or something. I don't know how spl really works. Could somebody tell me. I'm just curious.

From what I remember, every 10 db's is a double of sound.

So from 100 to 120 would be a quadruple.

The 3db thing is you need to either increase your cone area by 2 or double your Power to see a 3 db increase.

Don't quote me on this though

straight from wikipedia.org

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel...8_.C2.BD_power

−3 dB ≈ ½ power

A level difference of ±3 dB is roughly double/half Power (equal to a ratio of 1.995). That is why it is commonly used as a marking on sound equipment and the like.

Another common sequence is 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 ... . These preferred numbers are very close to being equally spaced in terms of their logarithms. The actual values would be 1, 2.15, 4.64, 10 ... .

The conversion for decibels is often simplified to: "+3 dB means two times the power and 1.414 times the voltage", and "+6 dB means four times the power and two times the voltage ".

While this is accurate for many situations, it is not exact. As stated above, decibels are defined so that +10 dB means "ten times the power". From this, we calculate that +3 dB actually multiplies the power by 103/10. This is a power ratio of 1.9953 or about 0.25% different from the "times 2" power ratio that is sometimes assumed. A level difference of +6 dB is 3.9811, about 0.5% different from 4.

To contrive a more serious example, consider converting a large decibel figure into its linear ratio, for example 120 dB. The power ratio is correctly calculated as a ratio of 1012 or one trillion. But if we use the assumption that 3 dB means "times 2", we would calculate a power ratio of 2120/3 = 240 = 1.0995 × 1012, giving a 10% error.

Wow, thanks alot dude. Thats very helpful but also confusing to me. Too comlicated. I'll just stick with +3 db=2x louder.

Jeeze, I can't believe that. Thats crazy, that means that if my brothers Car is like just say 120 cuz I got no idea, that somebody with a 155 db car is 2,100 times louder than his? WHAT????? Thats crazy if thats right. Wow.

How much louder would 155 be than 120?

haha i have no idea maybe 23 times louder? There is like a 10% error acording to the wikipedia thing so like 22.1 times louder? This math is confusing the hell out of me

yeah, I guess that would be a nice way to die. lol I would rather just die in my sleep tho.

Yeah, I think that on Mythbusters, they said that a nuclear bomb is 249 db's. That would be sweet if there was a car that loud cuz then maybe it would make an explosion. lol

3 db is considered twice as loud although some people's EARS can percieve anywhere from 2-4 db's twice as loud

you are partially correct. a 3dB increase is the doubling of sound based on measurements with an instrument (tl, ac, linear-x, and etc.). a 10dB increase is what most human ears will perceive as the doubling of sound.
