Hmm with that amp my friends Car gets surprisingly loud with a single 12 albeit it's in a 6th order BP.
IIRC it was up around 130dB with 100Wrms.

Have you taken out the stock 6X9s? that shoulf free up some air flow. How is the box positioned? Subs back port back works well. How much port area is there? Is there room around the box for the air to flow?

Default Re: 2003 chevy malibu

The least expensive but potentially time consuming is to move the enclosure around also. You could also make a port through the rear deck to help with air flow. That option would be more expensive, and take a little time to get everything right. I say drop one of the subs, and go with a single sub. I'm pushing my L7 12" with 1330 RMS on a daily basis, and have poped a 146.9 in a prefab enclosure. Also, my gain is all the way up all of the time. I'm trying to see if I can blow it. It hasn't had any problems for the past 4-5 years that I've had it. Is each sub in it's own dedicated side of the box?

I thought the same but he DID say that he's trying to blow it by cranking the gain... so cant really fault him.

to the OP, I have this sneeky feeling that by having your subs on 2 different planes (meaning one's on the top and ones on the back) you're losing a lot of output and possibly having cancelation issues because of it.

Make a box with both on the same side, that way they have a coupling effect that's good for a good added output.

If you dont mind damaging the Car a little you could cut a little foam out of the seats for easier airflow. Also removing rear speakers for additional flow would be good too.

Is your trunk flexing like a mother fker too?

I understand that, but I'm trying to test a theory. I want to prove to myself if it's wattage or frequency that will cause failure. I know that I can look at videos all day long on woofer failure with regards to SPL competitions. I'm also trying to prove a point to one of the local shops.

popping the subs has to do with during the clipped portion of the signal it changes from an ac signal to a flat dc signal, this pours constant power through the coil, the sub wasnt designed to disappate heat from a constant flow like that. its designed around an ac signal.

neither.

as Perfect said, cranking the gain doesnt really increase your true wattage much but gives you a crap ton of distortion, which in turn is "dirty power" which leads to woofer failure.

when you get a clipped wave, you send power to your sub in a square wave, meaning there's extra power going in the coil that the woofer cant disapate with movement of teh coil, meaning additional power+no additional cooling=overheat and blown woofers.

exactly.......build a new box and work with the port tuning and placement.

box technique has a lot to with spl and sq, its not just wattage.

Default Re: 2003 chevy malibu

The way mine is setup right now is my low pass cross over is set to roughly 60hz, normal listening volume is 21 with the woofer turned to -13. If I'm going to run it harder, I'll go to a max of 0 for the woofer. Anymore and I get distortion. The only times I've gone higher have been in a couple of spl competitions that I did. I agree that I have to get a better box, but to get the numbers that I want, WinISD says is going to be a really big enclosure.

and this is the third if you have an arm rest you can cut out behind it and have your port right there so your box is ported directly into the cabin. ie. just like sri's. very helpful when your seats either dont fold down or you dont care to fold them down all the time.
