Been out of the stereo world for almost 7years and just got a new ride and wanted to sink some cheese into a nice system. I went to look for a reliable Alpine head unit but their line is less than impressive and I am looking for something that has a bandwidth and adjustments to get the sound I want without having to go with an external i processor anyone offer this anymore?

80prs,800prs,880prs are all amazing h/u's, that are hard to beat... Unless you can find the H701 and a compatible deck to go with it, Alpine effed themselves, dismissing the H701 for that crappy imprint crap, and once again tjmho..........

As far as the issue with noise throgh the pioneer rca chasis grounding has that changed? Or does that make any sense at all. I know I had the p80-mp and it had to be returned 2x for rca noise so that's when I went to the 9886. Also is the "Stage 4" head unit from Pioneer worth the $ or not?

I personally don't have any issues with my pioneer but have heard its still happens from time to time... very easy fix
Mines nothing impressive as the ones your looking at

There is no improvement, just allows you to hook up the mic and dial in the sound for your exact placement of your head. I have preset 1 set for just me and preset 2 set for if there is passengers in the car.

Or just drop some solder onto the rca's to ground them to the chassis of the HU.

The pioneer Pico issue was there for the most part for idiots. Don't hot swap rca's and you will be fine. 9887 was a great hu...why in the hell Alpine ditched a hu with built in active is beyond me. Pioneer ripped them a new a$$ when they came out with the 80prs since it can do it stand alone without all the Imprint bs you now need to buy with Alpine. I just aquired an 80prs and I have the luxury of doing a direct comparison of the 80prs to a drz9255. We actually swapped hu's with all the exact equipment intact. The drz sounded better but not for the price difference IMO. Plus you get all the modern bells and whistles of the 80. The Build quality of the 80 is the downfall though. The 880-800 had a very solid feel to the face. The 80 feels cheap. A cheap plastic volume knob and it really makes me nervous to detatch the face. I think I'll leave it in place to be safe. Pioneer packed a ton of great features and quality inside the 80. The downfall is the exterior. Then again the 880-800 had a retail somewhere around double the price. All that rolled up....I would highly reccomend getting the 80prs.
I gave up on Alpine around 2003. Switched over to Kenwood decks and have never looked back. Kenwood now owns JVC and they have some awesome features for the price. Those or Pioneer are what I recommend to everyone. I doubt I ever recommend another Alpine deck.

Kenwood does make a decent hu but for the price of the 80prs and the ability to run active ....The Pioneer is a no brainer. that or the Clarion cz702 at an even cheaper price.
i say look at the pioneer line of things they are doing pretty good when it comes to head units but from my understanding those clarion nx501 or something is the best in the biz for car audio system

I just now found out about the 80prs, that may well be my next purchase. I haven't seen a deck with those kind of features at that price point anywhere before.
