Use an RCA spliter.

that or you might need a line driver depending on the preout voltage of your HU. If it is 1 volt then I would def get some kind of line driver.

its just an unecissary point for failure. if he was running multiple amps then maybe.

the input impedance is so high however you have to split quite a few times to see a drop in voltage.

i split 10v 6 times and each amp was seeing 9.2v or something like that. i would have been just fine without a line driver, only reason i left it in was to keep the h/u from being damaged just in case lowering the impedance that much might have drawn too much current.

however i don't ever recomend putting more than 4v into an amp. 5+ can potentially fry some amps.

I am more concerned with the fact of his amps getting a clean signal not enough signal.

His deck only having 1 preout isn't really a good sign without knowing the brand.

Decks clip too and with a line driver that greatly reduces the chance of that while giving the amp plenty of input signal.

IMO if it is a cheap deck I would use a line driver.

OP.. what deck is it?

A lot of mono amps have 2 RCA inputs, but you don't need to use both.

I've never seen the point of running a pair of RCAs back to a mono amp...

1 RCA for me all the way. IMO line drivers are overkill. As far as a clean signal goes, keep in that each thing you put in the signal path adds noise. If the H/U can adequately drive the amp, then I don't see the need for a line driver.

Yes the higher voltage will help reject the noise the RCA will pick up between the line driver and amp. But any noise before the line driver is going to be amplified as well. Depending on how things are setup, it might end up with more noise this way. Not to mention it makes it much easier to clip the amplifier.

Y cables or just using one input on the amp are the way to go IMHO.

aren't the L/R inputs internally summed for double the voltage? Or is that not how it works?

Yessir. That is a good point.
But that summing would still occur with Y splitters @ the amp.

Op Amp Summing Amplifier

With the Y splitter you would be essentially wiring the left and right input resistor in parallel, halving its value. This causes twice the current to flow, which means the current flowing through the feedback resistor needs to double to keep the voltage at the inverting input 0V (virtual ground). That does indeed double the voltage.

So I guess that is an advantage over using 1 RCA. Good call.
Either way, I'll stick to dem Y cables FTW
