agreed 100%

the best way to get a bangin PC system for cheap is to do it yourself though

my friend wanted a nice system for his PC but only had about $200 so...

we used 2 pioneer full range speakers ( i had them laying under my bed for a project that never happened)

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=290-045

and a single 12" Dayton DVC

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=295-490

At this point he had only spent $50 (on the sub)

I designed and built twin voigt pipes for the full ranges and a simple 1/4 wave tline (1-0.5 taper on the throat) for the sub

IIRC the total cost was a total of $150 for the wood, sub, wire, screws, and paint.

After that, we had $50 for an amp....bummer....
We decided to wait a little while for the amp.

Well, about 2 days later we saw a "yard sale" sign and I collect various nick nacks so we stopped and looked around not expecting to find much.

We were about to leave when I looked under some pile of old video games and cables and i saw some old JVC home amp thing
i looked on the back and it turned out to be a 4 channel full range amp that put out 25wrms x 4 @ 8 ohm

I picked it up and it was in pretty good shape for how old it was (the sticker said it was made in 96)

I took it to the dude in control of the operation and asked him how much he wanted for it....
He said the internal fuse was blown and he had no use for it so he never bothered to replace it

We started talking about a price and he said...(this is what I love about the ppl who live here!)...he said "You know what kid, you're allright. If you help me out here for an hour or so, you can keep the damn thing "

We ended up staying there all day talking to some mid-50 year old looking dude we never even met before about random stuff from our lives and what not and had a pretty damn good time.

The next day we took it apart and sure enough, blown fuse.
We replaced it and it turned right on.

We hooked the amp up to his computer and wired up the amp to the speakers.

At only half volume (about 16w rms to each Speaker and 32w to the sub) this system came to life!

In a nice sized bedroom (180^2' maby) it was pretty pain full at 3/4 volume.
Not to mention the crazy SQ...

When you listen to music on most of thos prefab systems you can hear the sound coming from the direction of the speaker...
With our creation you could listen to music any where in the entire room and swear the entire system is surrounding you.

It was easily the loudest and cleanest sounding system I have ever heard in a home from only two speakers and one sub (and i used to run 2 10" Emence mids and an 18" Peavy sub (250w rms to the mids and 250wrms to the sub) all in sealed boxes)

that one 12" sub made my old set up (with an 18) look like a complete bitch on the lows
we could play 30hz tones and every thing in the room that wasnt furniture either move or fall off the wall

20hz tones felt like some one taking the plam of their hand and just pushing on your chest and back

Sorry for such a long story, but the bottom line is:
If you have the know how, and a little good luck, you can end up with a system that sounds like it cost 10x more than what any of that pre-fabed stuff runs.

To put all that into perspective, my friend had some one offer him $300 for just those 2 $20 pioneer 8s.
We tried to explain it to him (the whole "90% enclosure, 10% driver" thing) but he simply couldnt believe that 2 cheap ass speakers from parts express could sound any where near as good as they did

[/short story]

Well, I have to be brutally honest here...
If it has to do with audio and you are actually serious about the kind of system you want, don't go to walmart =/

All the audio stuff there has "Peak Power!" written all over it and will most likely sound like ass unless your room just happens to be similar to the one they tested it in (if they tested it at all)

And even if you have that going for you, it will sound sub-par at best.

You know those Bose 3-2-1 things?
my uncle bought one when it came out and he couldnt stop bragging about how "awesome" it sounds.

I went home and took apart an old sony shelf system that had 2 4" speakers and an 8" sub
I had some ply wood laying around so i made a regular t-line (no tapers, flares or any thing)
i tuned it to 35hz ( IDK the fs of the sub so i used a 4db 35hz boost on an EQ i had at the time

i had 2 voigt pipes made for 3" speakers that i had so i cut the hole bigger and loaded the line with pollyfill ( i had to because IDK the t/s specs of any of the drivers and pollyfil helps to even every thing out)

at this point i had spent $0 (the ply wood was extra left over from some skate board ramps we made, and the sony shelf system was found in my dads shop one day(we dont know where it came from )

i took all my creations over to his house (i lived there at the time) and hooked it up in the basement.
i asked him to come down and listen to my stereo (wink)
he asked me alot of quetions (the usual "how much power, how much did it cost, whered you get it?" deal)

i told him every thing that i did

about 2 days went by and i saw that all the bose stuff was gone (i have lived in ghetto parts of town my whole life so i thought it had been stolen)

he came home later that night and siad that he returned all the bose stuff and told me to hook what ever i had in the basement, up to the TV

i kinda thought that story was funny

to the op: you cant really compare those 2 setups. ones a low powered 5.1, the other is a higher powered 2.1. ive heard the 2300. not to bad. i have 3 of logitechs older low powered 5.1, and for their age/power/size, they are not half bad. it just really depends on what you want to do with them. i currently have their 5300 set. its not made anymore, least not that i know of. for not having digital inputs, it has great sound. lacks on lower bass notes, but its a bandpass style sub.

thanks for the tips, but i dont think im gonna make my own system, i dont have the patience.

im not really looking to spend over like $100.

But i'd like nice bass output and highs to match it. 5.1 or 2.1, doesnt really matter.

Could you give me some brands and model numbers for some speakers with great bass and highs to cover it?

thx again

i was thinkin of getting my dad to search em up on ebay, my dad recently got this deal where the dude said shipping was free and my dad paid $24 for the speakers and sub. turns out the shipping on the box said $25.xx. and my dad paid $24. so the dude actually lost money and my dad got paid a dollar to get those speakers LOL.

But in terms of output, which one would be louder? thats pretty much what im looking for between the 2

the z-2300 is much better than x540 especially at bass, the satelites are louder to,but they had distorsions at high volumes
