well i guess my case has room for a third 200mm fan on the side as an intake.

so that'll make 3 120mm , 1 140mm, and 3 200mm's lol. not sure what i'll use the other 140mm for.

My next step will be liquid cooling in this bish. My idle temps are bad and I'm at 66C under load even with my new awesome fan setup. Luckily this case is designed for that.

well that is true... although i'd be amazed if any of them go bad when i have them all set to minimum on my fan controller.

what cpu cooler? don't go with a prefab water cooler.. there's air coolers that are better and cheaper.

if you're going custom loop however, hell yea.

Default Re: Computer Thread

theres a bunch of benchmarks showing comparisons of water coolers. the h100 is where they start to benefit over air. a 212 can rival a h60/75 so why spend 70$ on one? just get the 212 for 30. h100 would be the lowest i would go... but as pro stated i would do a custom loop. for the same price as a h75 you could have urself a bad ars water cooling for the cpu and gpu.

the biggest thing is getting water blocks. but if u know someone that can work with aluminum or copper. than that wouldnt be an issue, just need 2 pieces of aluminum about .25'' each and make tubes through each side and them meld them together to create a solid block with tubes for water passage. theres a walkthrough on making ur own water cooling someone where ill see if i can find it just to give ideas.

Custom water block and cooling-system

something like this is what im talkin bout. its just a passage for water to travel through. you take and put a cap on the open end and put connections on the opening for tubes and you got your in and out for the water pump.

just need to pressure test it with like 15 psi (15 is WAY more than the pump will be making) and see if it holds for a good few minutes and ur golden. but as always just cause its called water cooling doesnt mean to use water. use something thats non conductible incase something does happen

a few solid air coolers that are 20db quieter, same temps, and cheaper than a h100.

me too man. the nzxt will probably be my choice if i decide to upgrade.

i'm pretty sure the noctua and phanteks would need some low profile ram and the cooler removed to access it.

herm... i don't use steam much, but next time i'm on i'll add you.

got my 5850 working today. had to flash a new bios to it. works now... however my vreg temps are getting around 130c with my core temps staying around 70c all at stock clocks. i'm getting 30-32fps @ 1080p furmark. idk if theres a bad thermal pad in there or what but 130c seems too damn hot for any kind of electronic.

they show 30c idle and phase 1 is 120c or so under load. i think i need to get a new thermal pad for them. time to do some searching. i can't add ANY voltage to the card or it will crash..

AFIK anything over 110c roasts the component. Are you sure it isn't just a sensor malfunction?

When I got my first HP it was prone to overheating and if it got to CPU 104C it would turn off automatically. 130C is 266F so maybe hold your hand by it and see if it's really getting that hot :P If it is go ahead and fr up some eggs on that bish.

Default Re: Computer Thread

well for most nvidia cards like the 8800 and the 9000 series I am pretty sure under load its best to keep it under 85C, anything over that and the card could be in danger but the GPU can handle a max of 120c before being almost sure of dying. but them older nvidia cards shut down aftwer hitting 105C and a quick google shows the 5870 shuts down automatically when it reaches 120C im sure the 5850 is around the same...

The 5xxx cards happily purr away at around 80-85 degrees as a norm, you can force cool to a lower figure, but there is not much point doing so, its what they are designed to run as when working at pretty well full load.

At 100 degrees its time to perk up and do something - definitely too hot

At 105 degrees the gpu will start to downclock to protect itself.

At 120 degrees - it will mutter 'screw you', and kick in the thermal cutout to prevent it melting.

no, this isn't the gpu core getting to 120 degrees. its the vregs. edit: the vcores don't get above 75c

i did some research and 120 degree's isn't out of the question. the rated max temp for them is 120. i had to cut voltage below stock to keep the temps from going above 130... as in a long furmark run at ALL stock settings the card would crash after 10 minutes or so. edit: not saying 120 is good. but it can be seen with poor thermal pads.

i believe the temp is accurate. i need to find some new thermal pads before this thing smokes.

Amazon.com: Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 5870 VGA Cooler ATI HD5870: Computers & Accessories

thermal pads are going to run me about 20-30 bucks. aftermarket cooler is 46 sheeped.

ima geet eet. reviews show a 30c temp drop @ load, plus it comes with thermal pads and heat sinks for vrms and vregs.

might be a gamble, possible the card could be hurting already, but hopefully not. i wouldn't feel right selling it the way it is anyway.
