Computer Thread

We've got a new music thread, just for laughs thread, cell phone thread, audio stream of thought thread, ect. so I figured we could use a general purpose computer thread too where we can talk and ask questions.

I'll start in the next post to keep this one relevant as introduction type deal.

Re: Computer Thread

Okay so I just got a new case, a 120GB SSD, and a fan controller. I decided to do a fresh install of windows 7 and everything was going great until yesterday when I restarted the computer to install some windows updates.

That morning I had completed the install, downloaded my games and apps, and had the computer ready for use. I backed everything up, created a restore point and all that good stuff. I leave for work, come back, and Windows wants to install some updates. They install I restart and then something weird happens.

Every sound that comes from the computer (system sounds such as logging off/on, youtube videos, music, whatever) is slowed down and sounds kind of chopped up. I tried to restore back to an my initial image and it didn't solve the issue. Any ideas?

Re: Computer Thread

i would go into the control panel and revert to the old driver (if it gives you that option) if not uninstall the driver for the sound card. reboot. see if it fixes it. windows should put a generic one.

Re: Computer Thread

As a side note, does anyone know why my Display Driver would keep failing? It does it about once every 30 minutes. Everything freezes except the mouse, everything goes black for a second, then no matter where my mouse was it is in the middle of the screen, I have a strobe of the frozen screen then a message pops up saying,"Display Driver crashed or has stopped working, Display Driver has been successfully restored."

Re: Computer Thread

certain programs can cause that. skyrim does it on my computer from time to time. if i restart it wont do it again for a while however.

need more info about the pc, mainly the graphics situation. dm would be a lot more help than me probably..

Um, Comp is a HP DV5-1235dx with a 1T internal hard drive and Windows 7 installed... Otherwise stock. Mine does it all the time. I can be on google chrome, winisd, winmediaplayer, LFS, Itunes... I don't really play games except LFS on here and I haven't tried playing it in months.

Re: Computer Thread

I built me a new computer around early summer using my same tower from my last computer I built. nzxt tempest tower, went with a evga 1155 motherboard. got 2 evga gtx260 superclock gpu's bought one when they first came out picked up a second one a while back used to run SLI. running 16gb of ripjaw ddr3 1600 ram. had 2133 ram the 2600K did not agree with it so sold it to a friend and went with 1600 ram. put a sata 3 120GB ssd drive in it LOVE IT, and a enemax 750 modular power supply. got g skill ram fan cooler and a zalman 9900 cpu cooler (not the best but its the one I wanted when I did my amd computer and could not afford it at the time)

with all that said, I modified my ram cooler so it mounted right above the ram instead a inch away from the top of the sticks. I replaced the stock front fans with thermotake ones and mounted the control knobs in the front panel. I think my dvd rom went out need to make sure the sata cable is hooked up. running windows 7 ultimate.

As for complaints, time to time my monitor goes black for a second or 2 then comes back. and sometimes i need to unplug it and wait 10 seconds (the screen flashes) then plug it back in for it to turn on....the evga motherboard has alot of nice features ALOT of custom settings but takes FOREVER to load up the bios i think it takes around 55 seconds or so before windows even starts to load but as soon as the bios is loaded BOOM BOOM BOOM desktop is up and loaded.

for speakers i got a logitech 5.1 system with the sub in a 1.2 cubic foot box around 18 inches of port tuned to 32hz for a 5.25 sub and LOVE IT. got a 32 inch 1080P LG tv hooked up threw HDMI as a second display mainly just for watchen movies. got a new HT receiver coming wensday. got a nice HT speaker set up along with a FI q 15 in 9 cubic foot sealed enclosure off 120 watt plate amp for a sub.....so when the logitech speaker system is not loud enough I can switch my sound card from the analog output to the SPDIF output and really jam or use that for watchen movies my desktop is next to my bed my tv is at the end of my bed.

right now working on fixing a laptop to use in my garage just ordered a new CPU for that.

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

Re: Computer Thread

nzxt makes some nice stuff. i just bought a nzxt phantom for a new build. I built this one to see if i would be into it... Definately am. Just slowly getting things around for the new build.

that 2133 memory on an a sandy bridge was a waste of money anyway. anything faster than 1333 is diminishing returns. I ended up with 1866 memory just because it ended up being a shell shocker sale.

current build is:
i3-2120
asrock pro4 z77 board
kingston hyperx3k 120g ssd sata3
seagate st1000dm03 sata3 single platter 1tb drive
crucial ballistix 1866 2g x 4
2 5770's in crossfire
rosewill challenger case
cooler master hyper 212+ cpu coooler minus the fan(little locked multiplier i3 runs cooool).
some overrated raidmaxx psu
going to put the stock cpu cooler and buy another seagate drive and sell this one.

new build will be
i7-3770k
same drives as above
evga z77 ftw mobo
7970 ghz edition card
8gb of g.skill aeres 1866(have)
hyper 212+ cooler(have)
nzxt phantom(have) with all the fans populated (2x200mm top, 120mm rear, 140mm front, 2 120mm side)
nzxt hale82-850w psu(this is about the only thing i'm flexible on, haha).

building it for triple monitor gaming. although i've really been thinking about getting a single 1080p projector. which the projecotor would be more than the monitors but i could run a cheaper card.

Re: Computer Thread

I've got the NZXT Sentry 2 touchscreen fan controller on my rig and it looks awesome. I'm a little disappointed that you got such a cheap case pro. You need to get on my level and get a corsair 500r :P

And regards to the audio issue some drivers that came on the dvd with the gigabyte mobo were causing the issue. Not even the audio drivers it either. I had to reinstall again and only installed the bare minimum to get my computer online so I could just let windows do it's thing. Everything seems to be working fine now.

Forgot to throw in there, got the logitech g15 keyboard and microsoft habu mouse

PROFUNDUS for one ill look more into the ivy bridge vs sandy bridge, the ivy bridge is newer which accepts pci 3.0 but from the research I did before they just are not that reliable. the sandy bridge really the 2600K area seem to be tank CPU's for the price.

Ill have to see if i can find it. They make a wide screen projector for gaming thats similar to running triple monitor but its seemless and its about the price of 3 monitors.

my case is a whopping 10$ cheaper than yours

lol

edit: comes out being about 10$ more due to filling the fan slots.

all i gathered was ivy bridge runs a bit hotter when overclocked, but the increase in speed per clock makes up for it. I likely wont overclock it too hard anyway.

mainly the pcie 3 and ssd caching are why i'm picking it over the 2600k

I didnt read through all the poasts Burk, but I would suspect memory.. And win7 with an ssd for your os will run fantastic, just allocate all your downloadable crap to a regular hd...

I googled your case an saw it for like $40?
Edit: I stand corrected that NZXT case is badass. I only saw the rosewill challenger listed...

yeah running just the OS and programs on the ssd is amazing. but expect a little delay viewing your documents and such takes a minute for that secondary hard drive to load them up since its idle most of the time

Ive got 2 of these and my friend got 1 of these and so far 100% problem free....reading reviews and such on SSD they seem to be a bit hit and miss. so far this has been a solid unit.
