RESX15noob ...contrary to popular belief a capacitor will stop your headlight dim problem (15 farad or better)...its gonna be cheaper than the red top.

you dont need more than 2 batteries if your running 900 watts, and an HO alternator is about $200, or almost what a redtop costs. so you spent about $600 on stuff you dont need.

Yes you do need and HO alternator. and you say "prolly pushing 900" so im assuming you havent metered your output? just my 2 cents

creyc Adding more batteries does create a larger "tank", or "buffer zone" of stored power you can pull from, independent of your alternator. Correct

However with most of our systems, we tend to make more "withdrawals" than "payments" without a H.O. alternator, and as such eventually even the largest battery bank will run down. And it's this scenario, the current draw of 6 dead red tops which not even the largest H.O. alts can satisfy.

By adding more batteries you're just adding a bigger gas tank. Eventually you'll need to refuel. That's why you plug your battery bank in to a large battery charger when you get home, once or twice a week to do what your alternator cannot do while driving.

kensaudio99 You probably have a defective or bad battery cell.

Kryptonitewhite just bein silly for the most part, but, I think people overguestimate a batteries tax on an electrical system. People think having a bunch of batteries requires HO alts to keep them charged. They stay charged on their own, for the most part. yes, there are SOME losses, but thats where the overguestimating comes in. If a guy just ran out and bought 40 batteries and installed them, no system or other things that actually USE the energy, for the most part the batteries just STAY charged and create a very small current draw.

Now, adding batteries lets your amps make more power, to adding a battery or 5 AND amps obviousely you need alts to keep them charged.

Point is this. I had bad headlight dimming (voltage drop) before, now I added batteries, so I have LESS voltage drop (problem not solved, yes I still need alt)

But adding batteries did not make the situation (voltage drop/current draw) worse

multiple battery drain... alternator?

I had 3 of my red tops installed a while back and was experiencing headlight dim with a lanzar @ 2 ohm, prolly pushing less than 900 watts

Of course a buncha people chimed in and said "cuz you have all those batteries!"

I did big 3 and planned on HO alt later (still plan when I can afford it)

Big 3 did NOT affect it.

Now the other 3 are in as well, so 6 total... No dimming.

I have 6 batteries, ONLY 4 guage for the big 3, and NO HO alt

Batteries can cause a little drain/strain when nothing is running and they are sitting idle I suppose from internal resistence, but adding batteries to an already struggling system is BETTER not WORSE.

Now there is a larger bank, a larger buffer zone. I can make smaller deposites/payments more consistently to keep charging them back up only after / only while something (amp) drains them., rather than the alt trying really hard to keep up while the amps are pushing power and drawing from the batt/alt.
