Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

So i got some money to throw down, and got this
New Rockford Fosgate P200 2 Punch Car Amplifier Amp 780687315276 | eBay

and.... so far its awesome. its doing more than i need in clean output, all i need to do is attach a larger heatsink to the chips and if i feel like it make a case for it, i might fiberglass one with airways along the heatsink. jesus, comparing having less than .5 watts on it to having 10 watts, its crazy... hope my neighbors in our attached housing arent mad.
Although the seller has some negative reviews, i received the item in 3 days, a pretty good shipping time , and it works great, came in good packaging. so if you guys are looking for a crazy good deal, 20 dollars for 200 watt amp, all you need to do is attach a heatsink/case

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

Dang.

PE also has some kit amps you could look at as well. Its just the board and you will need a power supply.

Please do, would love to hear which amps are worth the money, and post some pics of your enclosure

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

Doing a project like this at the moment. I'm using the CDT set I have and building a simple second order HP for the tweet at ~3300Hz. Its just a small sealed box iirc 7x10.5x6 and I bought that mini battery powered amp on parts express. It says it will be here Tuesday so I'll tell you how that goes then with more detail on the whole thing. Too bad that amp is no good

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

Alright so i bought the Lepai 2020a+ and i just recieved it today... AND.... It sounds like ****... The amp.. not the box, with the sony amp i salvaged it sounds amazing, bass is crisp, highs are smooth... With the lepai amp, highs are always harsh, bass under 100 hz is very very hollow to the point where it doesnt even sound like bass (any frequency under 100hz sounded like a 100hz... maybe distortion with any frequency below that). The lepai just gave me a headache and the highs were way louder than the lows. I got 5 watts per channel out of the lepai whereas from the sony amp i get 2 per channel... I looked up mods, but it would cost me more than the amp to get it to sound good... From my experience, Im never recommending this amp to anyone.

Yep figured I'd make that known. The gentleman seemed to like the amp for what it is.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

He used a 5A 12V power adapter from a computer monitor BTW. Tested RMS output with a resistive load over a reactive load. Much harder on amps. So keeping that in mind the amp can put closer to rated.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

Awesome, Thanks for the video. I kind of skimmed the video, I'll watch it thoroughly later.
But I dont know if he brought this up or not, but doesnt the input signal also help with how many watts can come out clean?
For instance with the current amp im using just plugging in the ipod i could get 3 volts clean. When i plug in my mini ipod booster (mini amp) and then to the main one, I get 3.5 volts clean. So maybe the amp could do better if the input source is higher. But nonetheless, Thanks for the video. If i have any spare cash, Ill buy this amp.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

bigdwiz benched that and a lot of other small amps like that one. I think it was like 5 or 6 watts unclipped at 8 ohms. Idk what amp power supply he used so you might be able to get more out of it like that review says. Except more power at 4 ohms instead of 6, backwards fool

Powering the box with the current amp i have i get 3.5 volts ac through the speakers, so im assuming im getting about a watt of power and it hits the lows alright. With 3 watts im sure it'd be better, but i hope i wouldnt over-exert the speakers. But wouldnt i want to look for something a little more powerful?

NEVER MIND: read the review with the one that comes without the charger (Parts Express
"I know exactly what you're thinking. "This one doesn't come with a power supply? Why would anyone buy this instead of spending a few more dollars on the one that actually works out of the box?"
I'll tell you why. Because the the power supply that comes with the other one is no good. It's a 12V 2A power supply, which means that at the very most it can draw 24 watts, which means that the most the amp can deliver is 10 watts per channel, probably closer to 8. If you're using 6 ohm speakers, you probably get 6 watts per channel, and with 4 ohm speakers, probably less than 4 watts. This makes clipping incredibly easy. It will distort at pretty much any volume above 3.
The amp is designed to take 5 amps, so buy this one and then spend ten dollars on a 12V 5A power supply. This will allow the device to deliver the full 20 watts per channel as advertised, and will reduce clipping and distortion. You'll end up spending a little bit more, but a good power supply basically supercharges this amp."

Turns out it takes 5 amps apparently,so in that case, it will work. Thanks Beckerson1, you def know your stuff. (Just a bit confused that on the back of the amp its rating says 12v 2amps. just mis-rated?)
LOL. I wouldn't say I know a lot. Mainly just because I was looking at amps such as this for cheap small projects.

It doesn't say anything about Max input power. I say that's a simple rating they put on as many people wouldn't know whats said above. Plus the amp will only use what it needs. So you can put a 100A power supply on it and it wouldn't hurt it.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

and thats the finished box. Yes the handle isnt perfectly centered because I purposefully wanted to hit at least one port baffle.
Anyways this box is awesome, you can easily hear about 70 hertz in any song rather easily. and it can recreate 30 hertz rather well. I only tested at .10 watts to 1.1 watts. and at 1 watt it still sounds great. I wish i had a slightly bigger full range amp that could push around 15 watts at 8 ohms.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

So I messed around a bit and I just went with this design although by the time i cut half the boards I realized a better design. But I put both in the same airspace. Which I realized it probably would've been better to put each one in their own airspace and port each separately. I think I could've done better but these speakers are rated for 10 watts and will be getting from .5 watts to 9 watts.
So this was what i was looking at and played around from here.

I had a little more wood to extend the port. I tried many angles for the final piece and this final angle seemed to lower tuning a tad and sounded better and the end result was this:

I just spray painted it really quick, and glossed it once. I'll probably upload the final pictures tomorrow. It sounds surprisingly good with just an ipod connected, I believe its only recieving .5 watts from the ipod.
Of course its not the best you've seen but for the basic purpose I'm using it for, this calibur of work is fine for me.
The extra speaker wire protrudes at the top by the speakers so that I could connect a bigger amp to power the speakers and/or easily place the oscilloscope leads on it to ensure nothing clips.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

Try a HD shoe box lile from DC or Nike... Real thick cardboard would probably sound pretty good calculate the volume and run a 1" port. Sounds like an awesome little project, also don't use the headphone idea, you would need them to run at 32 ohms for most headphone jacks if I remember correctly.

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

hmm, ill look around for one, and i guess i could do that. These speakers were ported in the original sony system. any advice or hypothesis on volume and port area?

(even though i spent months with car audio, im still a super noob. im not an average consumer who would buy the new 5000 watt amps with a 50 amp fuse, but i have built my own enclosures that sounded better than my friends prefab boxes at higher power.)

Re: Enclosure for 2 3" speakers (need some advice)

metal cans work wonders for some reason. maybe just build a box around a can lol.
