Its got multiple holes in it, one of which is rather large.

Nope, no holes in the magnet.

Nothing could get in at the voice coil regardless of whether it was in a box or not, the spider and dust cap stop any dirt or other particles from getting at the coil.

hmm, it really does sound like that coil could be a little messed up. I've just never heard of a foam surround affecting the speaker like that.

When I push directly in the center of the good sub, I get no noise what so ever. When you push in on the center of the bad one, you get a noise, but it is not completely disgusting (more than it should be for sure though).

When you push on the spider only, the noise is gone all together.

Unless the surround is seriously deformed, I don't see it affecting how the sub is centered.

I doubt the basket is bent out of shape, it is decently beefy steel as far as I can tell.

I took it to school and got my local audio guy to look at it. He said that when you push down on the spider and not the cone it does not make any grinding noise, so he figures it can be fixed by a new foam surround. He took it home to get his father to look at it and give me a final answer, so I guess I will know for sure by tomorrow.

If so, that is not exactly an option at the current time as I am on a tight budget.

Sounds like you have a fried coil.

I wont hurt to put them in a box until you can save up for some better woofers.

Woofers (first ones, need some help)

Ok, so I have gotten myself two Urban Audio Works 8" woofers. Now, I am fairly new to all this audio stuff, although I know enough to get myself by for the most part, however I seem to have gotten myself into a tangle.

As soon as I saw the words "super bass woofer" on the back of the magnet, I figured these where basically big piles of garbage, however I could not be sure, so that is why I am here.

In your past experiences, is UAW a reputable company or no? I am currently running them off of an old Akai stereo reciever, 200 watt max at 4 ohm...if this is a no no tell me now

So far they sound decent, however one sounds as if it has a blown voice coil. I would say that it definitaly does, however I have a feeling that the foamy (probably not the correct term, but the rolled foam surround at the edge of the cone) may be the culprit as it is damaged. When I push straight in on the woofer, I get a sort of grinding noise, however if I grab it from the front and underside (pinching it) and pull it over to one side, and then move it up and down, no grinding noise. Would a new foam surround fix my problem?

Last question.
These are free air subs, so they are meant to be mounted on an infinite baffle (correct?), but will it hurt them to install them in a box, whether it be sealed or ported or any other sort?
