Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

Bar none, the first "system" I put in my parents car back in 1986 or 1987 was the worst. It was made up entirely from product in the JC Whitney catalog.
From memory:
Head unit was Kawasaki
"amp" was an in dash 1/2 DIN 500 watt booster eq from Yamaha
rear speakers were some god awful 6x9's in a carpeted box

The only good thing about this was that I learned my lesson early on about going cheap on equipment and JC Whitney took everything back and refunded my money.... my next system that I purchased was all Rockford Fosgate Punch series (Punch 150, 75 & 45) and a Pioneer Premier DEH M66 head unit.. that was MUCH better.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

My brother got an enclosure from a friend for his 3 sony 12s way back in the day. It was originally intended to be for 3 10s sealed but was retrofitted to allow 12" woofers in the holes. There was a 3-4" circular hole in the box for the port. That thing was an abomination...

It wasn't long before we figured out that it sounded much better with the hole plugged so we used a sweatshirt to plug up the hole.

We hooked it up to the power supply, loaded it down to 2 ohm mono (I know... below rated ohm load), threw in some DJ Magic Mike and sat back with the meters hooked up and watched and waited. After about 5 seconds we hit the highest reading of 48 watts RMS.... about 30 seconds later it literally started on fire, but even the fire didn't last long as there was very little inside the amp to burn up.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

I had four concept audio tens that I picked up for 20 bucks for all four new. The specs were way off and I popped three with only 300 rms. It also blew out a channel on my opi a600.2 and the woofer output on my coustic xm3. Killed some nice oldschool goodness. Pissed me off

Worst equipment, some scoche 10s lol. or my MA HK802sx lol let's draw 300A to make 2kw....seriously.
There's one of those ma hk802sx's on cl here locally and dude wants 600 for it lol.

Worst I had that I can remember was an autotek mm 12 from like 6 yrs ago. 700 max and 250 rms p.o.s. I popped the coil clean outta the gap on maybe 200 watts. Good thing I only had maybe 40 bucks in it.

something might have been wrong with them. I don't know home much better the v2s are, but they definitely get stupid loud in my setup.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

The worst I've ever had to do for someone else was an amp kit. Bought from a local shop and was something along the lines of a never heard of Walmart brand. The power wire was barely 10 gauge and the speaker wire that came with was to small for the wire cutters I had. (18 gauge) Before doing this for him I reccomended that he use 4 gauge to future proof it. Sure enough now he wants more power...

You know that is past their rms and most likely dirty power right? Just about everyone else thinks sa8s are the cats pajamas buddy.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

The soundstream digi q that shorted out and fried my head unit, then when I got a new one under warranty it fried my Planet Audio 754 hybrid tube amp made by ZED audio that had been going strong for like 8 years.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

Had two sa8s, and lol no the 1160 was clamped for the pair, audiopipe apsm1500 mini amp, rise to 1.9ohms, best $122 I've ever spent and I replaced a pair of old ma audio ma8xls, they took the power better but not really any louder, and I could easily bottom them out in all 3 boxes, tuned 35-37hz just wasn't happy for the money

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

what 8's did you replace them with? 1100 clamped per sa8 is a lot of damn power haha.

i'm not going to go with worst but more so most hated piece(s) of equipment.

alpine 9887+ imprint module(didn't hold a candle to my 880prs), ma hk4000d(lanzar opti2000d crushed it in output and efficiency), and the maxxlink...(they're complete garbage. cause nothing but problems.)

i think maxxlink would be on the top of the most hated.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

Thread bump!

The first piece of audio gear I ever bought. Found a set of 5 way, yep 5 way, Pioneer 6x9's that had a frequency response of something like 23 Hz to 25 Khz. I thought I wouldn't even need subs with this amazing set. About 2 months after installing them they had blown woofers so I cranked the bass setting on my HU to compensate. To be fair they did sound decent before that.

Re: Worst piece of audio equipment ever used

Hmmm, worst gear... Most Sony gear from around 2000+ fits into that category.

Just installed them and turned the the gain and bass boost all the way up on that Walmart TIS1802 amp and then turned the sub output down on my head unit to compensate. Since joining here I have learned how to set gains properly so, who knows now. I still have one I can send back for the new PA P3 for $45 shipped.
I know the new MOFO's get really loud and tolerate some serious abuse. They're over rated, my neighbor has one sounding a little funny now off of 1000rms, but much like the Audiopipe amp feeding it, it's cheap crap that slams and keeps on working (he's a distortion monkey BAD STYLE!)

3 in a row, dang, where did everyone go?

One of my good friends had a Dodge of some sort (we called it a Dodge Turtle), he had the Jensen 1.5 din with the blue lit up volume knob. You couldn't turn the radio down which wasn't so bad, we would crank it up when he wasn't around and he would be PISSED because he would have to unhook the battery and reset all his radio stations to get it turned down. Things got SO much better when the volume control had apparently taken a liking to our game and started to TURN ITSELF UP!!! That's right, it would turn itself all the way up randomly. He eventually just got used to it, it would crank itself while going down the road and it didn't even bother him he would just listen to the blaring distortion happily!

I have! They're not the worst out there . The WORST for me was when Audiobahn first came around, at the time you could judge a cheap subwoofer from a good one by the build, they looked great. I ordered 4 Audiobahn 10's and man they looked stellar. Back then they were actually built from decent PARTS and you would think they were built well (so you would think, it's a trap). Good cast baskets, huge magnets and big coils. The first one of mine came apart at the spider riser (which they had BARELY GLUED TO THE BASKET). After that they started snapping their own tinsel leads which were stitched into the spiders. I paid a TON of cash to mail them back to Audiobahn when they still tried to act like a legit company, and they sent me 4 new subs that looked very much different. I tried one and it started acting funny within a week! I sold off all 4 of them as fast as I could and never looked back. I'de rather have the pups!!!

Dude, that sucks.

Mine... tough to say. I've owned a lot of nice equipment. My Soundstream XXX 15 kept going through recones. Could have been user error as far as installing the recone, but all 4 had the surround come off the cone.
Kenwood eXcelon KVT-815DVD. I owned it for a couple years and it just stayed in the box. Installed it in my xB and the flip-out screen broke on me about a year later.
