Assuming your running an enclosure where you can distinguish distortion

My case not so much.

But then again the MS-8 handles matching the gain

setting the gain for mids by ear is pretty easy since distortion is so easily heard. I could teach my gf or just about anybody new to audio to do it in 5 minutes. Subs are considerably more difficult, since distortion is hard to identify, but there are tricks to help out with it

I don't have anything against doing it by ear. More power to you.

But is it something you'd suggest to a complete newb over using a scope/dmm

Even if he has a friend (experience enough) to utilize a scope/DMM

There is really nothing wrong with setting gains by ear IF you are WELL experienced with audio. You can't expect a noob to set a gain with their ears, and I wouldn't advise them to in any case. If you have to ask how to set the gain, then you cannot set it by ear. Simple as that.

I haz o-scope but dmm is so much easier I would still pick either of them over by ear any day.

since we dont all have oscopes and dd1's and such bye ear is the poor mans dd1....most all my systems are set bye ear...

i set mine by ear, erring on a little caution. You can't really tell the difference between 100 percent power and 95 percent any way. Its never been a concern for me
