i can confirm that it works with the 4770k. thats the exact ram i have. running 3 sticks of it for a total of 12gb and it indeed posts and runs well

thats kinda a disclaimer of sorts. but as long as the xmp profile for the memory shows up is at 1.65v its verified via intel.

that mobo i listed has 4 fan headers for case fans, so you could use speed fan or the bios as your fan controller.

I like everything pro listed above but don't forget your fans + fan controller. Maybe I like playing with ym fans too much though.

just one thing to think about, how big do you want your tower to be. the larger options cool more efficiently in regards to noise output. if you're going to be overclocking significantly and pushing the machine hard that microatx might not be the best option. although with a i7 and 7970 i doubt you'll be stressing much, haha.

also, if your buying in pieces deciding on everything now, although seeming logical, isn't.

prices/values change daily. a different component than any of us listed could be a better option due to performing better, but a sale bringing it into your price range.

this thing would be as fast as you could get without going to the point of dimishing returns, ie crossfire/lga2011 socket parts.

i pick my cpu first and base my mobo choices around that. those are really the crucial points. make sure the mobo and gpu will fit the case too, i suppose.

Intel Core i5-3470, NZXT Phantom (Black) - System Build

that will play anything you want to throw at it @ 1920x1080 res or lower. if you end up ever goin multi monitor and wanna go above 1080 than you will need to add another gpu. if you deicde to go that route anyways just scrap the gpu and go with a 290x/780

I'm looking on PC Part Picker (to help get everything on one page)

You will have to be patient with me as I'm fairly new to this so Many things are new to me. I can defiently build one but as far as the parts needed I have no idea. Is it better to pick out a Motherboard first or pick out the CPU then match the motherboard to that?

Should I look into a I7 or would a I5 be more then enough.

Double post because fawk it.

I'd get an intel processor and an aftermarket air cooler for it.
I like Nvidia GPUs.
A ~112-156GB SSD for the OS and some applications with a decent 1TB 7200rpm HDD for everthing else. Since you will be doing movies maybe get an even larger SSD or another 1TB drive in a RAID setup.
Get a nice case ($100-150), a fan controller, and some decent fans. I like my Scythe Gentle Typhoons!
Make sure your mobo has plenty of space (no micro ATX) so you have plenty of room for cable management, air flow, and that massive CPU cooler + GPU. I have a Gigabyte mobo but I really like what I see with ASUS mobos.
Get a nice power supply! Too many people skimp in this area.

$1,500 will get you one hell of a rig. Mine can play anthing on pretty high settings and it ran me about $1000 (monitor included) and that was in 2011!

Computer build (component selection help)

What I want to achieve and budget (bare with me here):

1500 would be perfect but do have some wiggle room (say up to 1700)

I don't want purely a gaming machine. It needs to be able to handle photo and video editing, CAD (not hardcore but some use), along with a good majority of the games (I'm more of a racer (simulator type) so if you need a general game I would say F1 2010)

I will be buying in stages
