both the yellow and red on the head unit require 12v so both of those will go to a yellow feed off the power supply
the red on the power supply is only 5v

well i attached the green wire to the black on the cpsu and it came on beautifully. I hooked the 12v yellow to the yellow on the cd player and black to black and red to red and nothing happened. i tried it with just the yellow to yellow and black to black and also nothing. Any ideas?

If your power supply starts going into protect, I think a small battery would help that problem. I THINK. It'll atleast help :P

well i plugged up the cpsu and tested literally every wire and got no reading at all on the dmm. I had it set in the 12 volt range but nothing. Im thinking i got a bum cpsu which sucks because in my over zealousness i cut a couple wires so i cant take it back. However i found some rc power supplies on ebay for like 30 bucks(575 watt) so i think im gonna go that route. thanks for all the insight guys much appreciated

alright awesome thanks guys. and to blackdragon thanks for the insight ill have to be careful. any suggestions on what to do about that? with out buying anything else, ive already gone over my budget for this one build so...Also just thought about this when you say take all the yellow wires are you referring to every yellow in all the connectors or just the 20+4 pin connector?

You short pin 4, green wire to ground and that will turn on the PSU. Yellow is +12v, and black is ground. Twist and solder all the yellow wires together and do the same for the black. so you have a decent sized wire. Also, I have ran a small amp on a computer PSU. It was maybe 200w, and the PSU was a solid 600W. It output something like 40A at 12v. The amp was only rated for something like 25A. Anyways, when the bass would hit, more often than not, it would turn the supply off to protect itself. They don't like sudden surges. They like constant draw, or only minor changes.

yes it needs to be powered on.
set the dmm to DC volts and above 12 volt range
connect black lead from dmm to ground then touch red lead to the suspected power.

Hey sorry to be a dummy but i bought a dmm. However ive never used a dmm before. It does not have auto ranger. My questions are do i need to have the computer power supply plugged up to test which wire to hook up to the power and grounds on the amp and head unit? (most likely a really dumb question but id like to be sure). And should it read 12 volts when the wire search is successful? I know hardly anything about circuits and such

well its actually a 20 plus 4 pin connection and the 20 has 1 yellow and 6 black and the 4 pin has 1 yellow 1 black 1 red and 1 orange wire

alright on the 24 pin connector there is only 1 yellow wire but 6 black wires.

12 volt are typically yellow. red is typically 5 volt.. black is ground.

I thought the 12v wires were typically yellow? And like its a green wire that you're suppose to connect or something thats like a remote wire.

Thats why I prefer RC power supplies. Slightly more expensive but easy as hell to wire up.

from the manual (which is about worthless lol) it has two 12v rails at 18A max each a 3.3v and a 5v rail and a couple other figures I have no clue about -12v and 5vsb...

Are your wires included with the PS colored? if so in many cases black should be ground. Take a dmm and look for the 12v power wire...

I believe you will want to look at the 24 pin and 8 pin connectors as that should be where your 12v is located.

[MENTION=2804]profundus-sanus[/MENTION] might be able to answer this much better as he knows a little about computers...

I had a radioshack converter that put out like 10 amps at 14v. And it had a safety feature that turned off every time I tried pulling more then 10 amps. It sucked. And they weren't cheap. So a computer power supply would be your best bet. And possibly a little agm battery on the side.

i actually used some older ps3 power supplys an just linked them pos to pos neg to neg i can power an amp up to 60 amps at 12v

Yea you can geat cheaper 1200w psu's for about 100 and run a good setup in a house, great bang for the buck as pro says
