Re: Is car audio going extinct

Unfortunately I have to agree , car audio seems to be fading away, at least from what I've seen / heard .
Sad very sad .

Re: Is car audio going extinct

35. Putting a new setup in the car. Have kids. Ex wife. I got the point where the sounds makes me happy so why not do it? If it's a passion you have then put forth effort into it. Age is just a number and if you want to blow out your windows and irritate the neighbors then do it. As far as sound ordinances go, here in Florida they just recently got rid of the laws on the roads regarding violations. Unless it's super late in a residential.

New member here, let me introduce myself...

I am going to post a comment on this thread, I'm sorry if this was inappropriate... But I am a new member and I am still learning the site, and I am not sure if this will post. I would like to use this opportunity to introduce myself. When I saw this thread and it hit a nerve and I'd like to throw my opinion into the mix.
Car audio has progressed technically and I am not sure where it is going socially...
I tried to start a thread on another site and was immediately pounced upon by the " Internet Warrior Type " that whose aggressive reply was insulting and left my kid laughing his ass off! Too many elitist "know it all's" out there. This community is the same I'm sure. I was attacked repeatedly before other members reached out and apologized for their co-members bad behavior... I was livid! Someone called it a stupid question asked by a stupid person and it deserved a stupid answer... I remember My D.I. in the service drilling it into my head that the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask!
Enough said!

150 db for $1000 ...

Well... I seem to have done it! Years ago, 1996-7, I had a 152 db system that was musical pretty much all the way to 150 db. I spent 512$ each on a couple of stroker 15d2's, $1000 on two audio art 100hc's to drive them. an Mtx 4300 to drive my podded RF power components the system was EQed/ X-Overed even had a RF Symmetry and Mechman 175 ampre that I bought C.O.D. for $660 all in 1996 dollars...

Car Audio was really popular in the mid 90's!

Call it a mid-life, boredom or possibly my true colors showing later in life, but I've been putting a little labor into my wife's 1997 Blazer and have had some astounding success. The result sounds pretty darn close to my previous car... and for a whole heck of a lot less!!! With some prior experience, word of mouth, A little online research and some informative reviews her Blazer is a beast!!!

It seems to me that car audio has gotten more affordable than I ever thought it would... I don't think it is becoming less popular because of the price.

People who love, think their stock radios sound good haven't had someone ask them nicely if they'd like to hear/feel the difference. Nowadays it seem that mostly the only image being projected is an outlaw who pulls up next to someone and drowns out their music, shaking the others car with DB's, maddoggin' someone while your beat permeates the universe may feed your ego, but I guarantee the general image is taking a hit! This has led to many new sound ordinances being passed across America over the past 20 years. Yes, I did it and still do... but I also try to involve other people in an approachable way... So they don't see someone as threatening... and I believe that fact is true, as I've become older... " I'm 50 this year"... I see it myself... And I love the hobby...

There is my opinion and I am sure it stinks like all the rest, I know.So please be kind and don't give my teenager another reason to laugh at Dad for trying to post and only getting crapped on...

Nowadays The equipment is really affordable, read what I've done... for only $1000 total.

Simple Kenwood CD head, 1 set preouts... $80 + dash kit no antenna adapter...I really only use the flash drive anyways

1 set 4x6 Kickers in the dashboard $45

1 set 6 1/2 Kenwood coax in the front doors $40

Cache preamp/EQ $70

Lightning Audio Strike 400.2 $70

CAB 1600.1 $200

3e@ 12" RE audio SCX 12 D4 all parallel .67 load $100 ea.

All wire, blocks and terminales were under $100

then I added a $70 battery and Wow!

Who'd have thought in 1997 that you could attain these results for $1000 someday, it plays clean to 150 db and takes me at full retard for 4 minutes to heat up the subs and start to smell the coils a little they're a little underrated for the capabilities of a CAB 1600.1 at .67 ohm but I can play clear music enjoyably at 147-8 db all day long, the funniest part is I have it in a total sleeper 4 door Blazer and still have some cargo room for groceries...Sheesh! All with $100 dollar subs. I remember a 12 ft3 enclosure, no trunk, hidden amps in a false seat, EQ, RF Symmetry, and MDF panels on the doors and under the headliner area back in the day! What a money pit! I did all my own work and I had $4500 invested! Someday I will probably add a 250A alternator to her Blazer to see what happens. Since its a lot more affordable than it used to be. I fear that I am becoming a little DB mad, and I feel that the extra current from an upgraded alternator will probably result in 3-12" boat anchors and I'll have to upgrade subs at that point... Oh Well... It's only money...

Any ideas on upgraded Subs? I like the power at the load I'm currently using (.67) , the amp does not get hot, it just pulls a LOT of current!

Old school was and is cool ...

But ya gotta love progress!!!

Re: Is car audio going extinct

I help people where I can but here in memphis alot of bad shops and bad Installers =out to a horrid car audio scene here....but 3 or 4 times a year we have a mid south bassheads meet where 20 or 30 cars get together and demo and tune and meter for awile. (Memphis cops hate us)....but the everyday bassheads kid going to a shop to get a system put in isn't happy around here so that runs a few of them off

Re: Is car audio going extinct

Here in cali it's actually pretty steady I just got into it last year my install skills suck still learning thanks to kickinblazer and this forum been getting better noticed a increase on people on our California bass heads group and wanting to get into it but lots of dealers still post ads on fb for cheap amps saying they 5k for 99 dollars and not informing the customers what they are actually getting. I was one of them before bought systems when I was younger not knowing that I was paying way to much for cheap equipment. But so far just in Jan and February there is a complete like every weekend and more to come since California is trying to get more other then db drag and meca

Re: Is car audio going extinct

Depends on where you are. Is it dead? No its actually making a comeback in a way.

Bass heads, no offense to guys here, (please note not all of the installs are like this), tend to worry more about the number then if the install looks good. It's a treat when you get a loud system that actually looks pleasing to the eye.

What pissed me off the most is if they absolutely trash a very nice car.

Re: Is car audio going extinct

Car audio is definitely not as popular as it used to be. Most of the people I see get their stuff from Wal-Mart and most ppeople have no clue how to install.

Is car audio going extinct

Is car audio dead...
I'm 38... I remember being 16 and hearing the 1st system coming towards me from a block away and shaking my car and all I could think was.... dam... that's what I want. Had many systems. Installed professionally for years. Just put a system in my sons car for him.

Well last week after CES there was a bass head meet....
I expected to see company cars.... huge systems..... mega bass.....
Ummm... no.

There were a handful of cars. Most systems were super low budget. Cheap equipment, low quality work.

Was this just a bad day I happened to go on.... or is car audio dying off....
