Default Decide MY Ride's Death ( Subs )

Yea pretty much, I keep having second thoughts about my ride... I have 2 solo x 18s so far out of the four I was planning to use but of course I always feel the need to change my system again.. oh joy.

So It's up to you guys to let me know what I want lol..

i'll let this run this weekend and see what all it decided.. i'm by no means trying to follow a forum boner, just trying to clear things up for me somewhat.

Let's Throw Some Votes On This Bit(h

they have tinsel slap which would be easily fixed by using woven tinsels that and the solo x is a better driver all around and Im not just talking about the bit more cone area it has either as it is a simple sub to just recone

If you get the Solo's

kill yo self

I've never owned a solo-x but for some reason i dunno why, i hate them. I have a boner for the BTL, not because everyone has one, but I just love the look of them in videos. The motor looks scary, and I own an Fi myself. My nuts are on them right now

the only sure fire way to take care of the tinsel slap problem is to go with woven tinsels like many manufacturers

Only problem with that theory is that with a high excursion sub and abuse those wonderful woven leads snap and burn holes in spiders...unless you do it like DD does, then you don't have a high excursion sub. The big leads that we use will burn holes in the spiders as well, but the teflon coating has fixed that. We've tried woven leads, and in abuse testing over time fatigue sets in and the leads simply snap inside the spider...now that'l all change when a 12 spoke isnt used.

Only ones that have slap are the 12's, and whenever we get around to the new basket and other things that wont be a problem any longer.

The other issue with the tinsel pulling out of the terminal has been fixed as well. When you use a lead that big the copper inside of it doesn't get hot enough during soldering and it will pull it out of the jacketing, typically the lead is snipped after being soldered, we now leave the solder there and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks

To the OP: Honestly, seeing as how you already have 2 X's...you'd probably better off in getting 2 more, i believe it would be cheaper in the long run.

x2. I dont see why everyone thinks woven tinsels are the solution to all problems. If the subs were better with woven tinsels, Im pretty sure thats how they would be.

If you're looking for the cheaper way, go with the Solo Xs. They will be loud for sure. If you wanna spend a little extra and take the time to buy 4 subs instead of 2 more, go with the BTLs. They will definately get loud too. Either way you wont be dissapointed.

And how does everyone have BTLs? Maybe alot of people have them online, but im 99% of cities, not everyone ons a BTL. Around here in the Tampa/Orlando area lots of people run Fi, but in most places, not so.

:-D more solo x lovers then I expected lol.. I appreciate everyone's input thus far. To dylan dude, I think lol don't wanna scroll back up but anyhow, I will not be walling for now, I am not experienced with that much woodworking and calculating and such yet anyhow.. i'll be doing a subs up port back, back row of seats down... Then maybe i'll get an experienced person do work me up some stuff for a wall later on.. anyhow, it's been also suggested I make a bassracer for fun.. i've never competed.. but it sounds kinda fun.

As for going for more money on the four btls gmonk..

solo xs are going for over 700 on ebay right now with a few days still remaining on the auction(s) and I can get loaded btls on ca for 400 shipped - 450 shipped each if I decided to switch, i'm sure someone would have been willing to work up a trade too though, I may switch later on as well.. i've owned all the solo xs several times in the past from a single twelve to the 6 10s to 3 18s in total.. over time. I like to hear people's reasons as to why they like each sub though and this forum/thread helps me in making my own assumptions as to the overall liking or disliking people have.

:-D so Thanks again everyone.. I think I set the poll to close around the end of tomorrow, but doesn't look like btl is liked as much as I thought as an overall choice between these two drivers.

i think a lot of people are on the btl nuts right now, but so many people run kicker stuff. i always love to see people run non-mainstream shizzle. i know you guys will argue that Fi is mainstream, but nobody within 200 miles of me (at least) even knows what Fi is. they think capacitors and sony explods are as loud as you can get.

honestly I just like to impress people with 18" subs period really

i say BTLs so you can still run them as daily driver setup (sorta). the solo x's are strictly comp subs that arent designed to play longer than 1 min at a time.
