Default converible systems

i saw in a thread on another forum that if you have a subwoofers in a convertible you will lose 85% of your sound with the top down..how true is that? and will it help if the subs is facing towards the cabin

you wont lose any sound, it just doesnt resonate well through the Car with the top down or up for that matter....the sound just kinda passes through the soft top...It may help if you faced the sub(s) toward the inside of the car for FEELING THE BASS purposes, though...

you lose the ability to gain any cabin pressure, which of course how a TL measures levels.

and the sound will just escape through the top, its pointless in my opinion

have you all never heard of home audio or pro audio or any audio that doesn't revolve around cars and cabin gain??

Sure you can have bass, and yes, it will register on a TL. Just remember you're no longer operating with a cabin gain, or a roughly 12dB gain to the bottom of the lower octave. Your subwoofer needs to be designed more for the home audio type environments, something that would normally sound quite boomy with cabin gain. Sure, it would make a miserable vehicle for competing, and it will require a large enclosure for less bass than you might be used to but it's not as hopeless as this thread might make you believe.

mjf595, i think this is the first time I disagree with you. lol

thats all i was really trying to point out myself, just didnt really have the time to type it all out, havent had a whole lot of time on the forum lately anyhow.

i just generally am under the assumption that more people who intend on putting a system in a car, generally any semblance of SQ is far from their minds. (large majority, not everyone)

So when the idea of a system comes up in a convertible, more than enough people will still try to jam as much crap as they can in it, and complain when it doesn't perform up to par against a car with a cabin.
