Default 4 12s or 2 15s ?

Ok first question on this forum. My buddy has a extended cab s10 truck with 4 mtx 12s trx55's I think " there the cheap ones " in a sealed box that has 1 cube foot per sub after sub displacement. He was going to upgraded with 4 Re se 12s. He went 144.7 at a comp last weekend at he wants to be louder than he is now but still sound good and clear. I recommend 2 15s in a ported box. And he dosent think the will sound good/ keep up with a fast bass kick in a metal song. He also listens to a lot of rap. I told him that they could if you get the right subs and a good box. So what are yalls opion would you go with the 4 re subs in the sealed box or 2 15's in a ported box ? If the 15's what would yall recommend ?

what 15's depends on price range and Power range, as for loudness the 4 12's will have the most potential but i wouldn't go with re, but from a quick search shows sonic has the re's for 179 if thats his price range, i would get 4 sa-12's or 2 sa-15's for 15's

I forgot to mention the price range if its 12's about $200 apiece he will use the sealed box he already has if its 15's no more than $2500 for the subs and amp/ amps to push them. He says if he goes with 12's he wants 150 db's if he goes with 15's he would like to see 160db's

lol 2 15's and he wants 160? that a lot of work, not just a simple hook up. the 150 on 4 12's shouldn't be hard at all, i do believe he has it backwards though he should be aiming for 160 with 4 12's and 150 with 2 15's. the 12's would be easier to get louder due to more cone area.

as far as why i wouldn't get re is cause re sold to a china company and is no longer re, they completely changed there parts.

and with $200 price range it don't get much better than sa's that should be his winner. 4 dual 2 ohm sa's will get brutal loud. and a brz2400.1 to push them at 1 ohm, and the money he saves from going with a cheaper amp he could put in deading his car, plus electrical, cause that will help alot on numbers. also i wouldn't use the box he has already i would Build a new one to meet the specs of the new subs

He already has dynomat everywhere ... when he first mentioned upgrading his 12's I was thinking 4 ssa xcon would be brutal but he says he dosent want to have that much watts and for some reason he dosent want to spend as much on 12's as he would if he went with 15's.. he is already planning on upgrading electrical ... when did re sell I must have been living under a rock lol

Default Re: 4 12s or 2 15s ?

First off if he only has 4 cubes after displacement then he would be better off going with only 2 12's and putting them in as big of a box as possible in that space. 1 cube per is starving pretty much any sub for air.

As dark said the SA's will get loud but again he's gonna need more air. Possibly a wall?

150's easily? 150 is never easy but it can be obtained. If he's talking about ''not wanting that many watts'' then he must ''not be wanting that many db's''. Oh and 160's? He has no idea how hard THAT is to obtain.

I would recommend walling it with 4 12's and 2 of those 2400's if he really wants to get as loud as he's saying he does (meaning 150's). You can't just throw 4 12's in half the airspace they really need and put half the Power they want to them and expect to somehow magically get loud.

Just my 2 cents.

to the op... I believe that your friend is being very unrealistic with his expectation. There are some things that he must do in order to get where he wants to be, for instance: he WILL NEED alot of power (watts), a custom ported box, and alot of cone area. Not tryin to be an a-hole but he will have to come to terms with these issues.
