Everything came apart without tools...

...and then I noticed I was bleeding from a piece of burnt aluminum (voice coil?) stuck in my hand!

damn how hot did you let that baby get lol? Although speaking of hot subs I once smoked a ground pounder in a unique fashion... This is a testiment to my brz1700's strength. I was on a long drive when I noticed my crunch sub making a little bit of an off sound.. this continued for quite some time... Got to my buddies house and the sub died when I tried to play it again. The wires had moved in closer from the spring terminals and actually grounded to the basket. My amp was Power almost a dead short for quite some time and no damage watsoever.. well the sub was done but other than that nothing..... Oh yeah and the magnet stayed hot then warm for 12 hours... that thing was hottttt.............. BACK ON TOPIC: How hard did you have to pull to get the silver retainer off the basket?

uh-yup! Someone told me it would be okay, and it was for a little while...

Oh, and the port wasn't what was whistling - the plug blew out of the hole I had the wires going into.

Default Re: Just melted the Hfi's

it is and always has been the box with the HFi subs...

they dont like sealed

they like extremely large boxes ( weak motors need more air...) with smaller than normal port area to control the cone... they also are designed for higher tuning starting no lower than 35Hz but ideally 38-43Hz..

user error killed the subs not the sub itself..

We have been running 450-600 RMS per sub in this fashion since they were 1st released and have never had 1 pop yet...

That's crazy! I assume you're setting the SSF at something like 35hz? These subs really do sound great in larger vented enclosures, way better than I expected.

Also SMCFAB can we get a pic of the bare magnet sub from the side? And are you going to pull the guts out of it and see what the coil looks like?

That means your box is tuned from 25 to 28 Hz and that is bad for those subs.

Must've missed this post. Within the first week the chrome ring came off easily when I pulled it out of the first box. This was probably the 90-100+ degree weather. I'm definitely gonna need tools to get the rest of the motor apart - that is still stuck good.

I've been meaning to pop that magnet cover off, but thought I would sell them. It RATTLES. The screen in the vent hole is good for...mmm...keeping the voice coil chunks in?

But YES - user error is to blame. Actually glad it happened before I actually sold the subs. I'm pretty sure the SSF wasn't set right for higher-than-MY-listening level. That and the boost knob on screwed bass notes. I thought I had it around 30-32Hz. Wish I had it clamped to see if it went higher than 1200w!

Brian - I'll try to rip the rest apart if I remember. Too many things going on, getting sidetracked; funny, it usually happens after the boredom sets in.

Twenty-three cycles <jizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!>

Full of WIN! Well, until the T-nut/screw holes didn't match, and the sub seperated the new port tube from the baffle. This blows the 2 Hfi's away in SQ. It's almost as loud on less watts, and a lot less noise. THIS BABY HITS LOW. I need to make a copy, somehow with a 4" port without making a bigger box.

I just threadjacked my own thread again!

Agreed. Mine stays at 15Hz. If I could defeat it I would.

But with subs with limited xmax having a SSF is a godsend.
But it won't prevent cooking coils, just bottoming.

I have a pair of Infinity 12's in my closet actually, not Kappa series I believe they're reference 1262s. I bought them, then found out one had a messed up tinsel lead It's fixed now but it makes me nervous.

Sic was right, so far my HFi's are holding up to right 600RMS just fine. I haven't really handed them the bag yet, but I've put some Power to them and they're fine so far, sound awesome!. I think that's one thing these subs will do, convince you they're not in distress until the bitter end
