Default Just melted the Hfi's

Went to the bank to demo and sell the Hfi's and box. Sounded real good. I mean, better than ever. Dude wanted to give me the $80 I was asking for them. ATM's broken, so I'll get my money tomorrow. Start the engine, put on some Pantera...ew, what's that smell? Brrrrrrf->AMP PROTECT LIGHT->D'oh!

OOOOOOOPS!!!

Dammit, now I have to spend another $50 to sell this box.

Too much Power and low Hz is what caused it. I see now they are selling for $70 per pair.

I need to stop wasting time and money and just buy better subs.

True better subs can last longer but it hurt a lot less to blow up cheaper ones lol.

I swear if one of the 8 12's start to let go, I'm just going to push them harder until they scream. Go out with a bang so to speak lol!

Default Re: Just melted the Hfi's

According to the chart posted on the "Setting Amp Gains" tutorial, I was just under 1200 @ 1 ohm. 3.9^ft box tuned to 34Hz. Yes, I DID mess with the boost dial a bit, but there shouldn't have been any clipping. Just their time to go. One was the original sub that sounded bad from day one; maybe it finally blew and took the other down with it?

I did get a hairtrick when the guy stuck his head in the window - didn't know I had enough power! The 3" port actually whistled on some notes; lesson learned. Amp seems okay - still didn't get hot. Wish I had gotten video on my new camera.

Time to build the GPV box, and I might be able to hack this box and retune it for my Infinity to put it either in the Corolla or home theater @ 24Hz. Got my eye on some JBLs too...

Those subs taking double rated is pretty wild. I'm running a Punch 500.2 2 ohm stereo on a set of HFi's vented in a big vented pre fab and I was scared to torch them on that

Yeah, they can get headache-loud! I rarely ever ran them at full power; I have my Polks running off the deck and I like to hear them with the bass turned down. My Tascam DR-03 recorder could pickup the lows even when I couldn't hear them and they cancelled out the higher frequencies in the recordings.

They still work and sound okay at low volume, but I don't want to fry my amp.

Sic would probably beat me down if he read this, but those subs and the AutoTek version can not handle the heat from their rated RMS. I have killed 4. There aren't but so many ways to set gains and I'm not a noob at doing it. I ran two at a time with my RF 700s and any song with a heavy or constant bass line would release the scent of burning coils. I don't recommend them to anyone.

They were the hella-cheap science project of the summer, no doubt. I read a ton about 'em. I just went with 1 SA-15 in the Astro instead of 8 of the HFi's.

You need to treat your subs better...

I have never not seen a hifonics sub not take rated. I would bet my system you were either clipping them or had them in the wrong box.

They are decent little subs and if you treat them right they work great.

I believe a wise man once said don't blame the tools... blame the user. Lol

to be honest, I was using a pre-fab sealed box that my buddy had that was probably too big for the subs. But i've done worst to other subs and they lived. Once, I have 4 Diamond D1 12"s on 2k and it handled it with no sweat. I just can't see 4 of these doing that.

They were both in 2 different sealed boxes on 300 watts, this box sealed on ~1200 watts, and then this box ported. Most of the time, I bet they were only seeing 600-800 watts. I think their lifespan began in April or May, so about 5 months. Not bad for $25 subs, even though I initially said they were crap.

Diamond under rates their subs so I am not surprised. I gotta buy one of those hfx's and test it out myself

I ran two at a time with my RF 700s and any song with a heavy or constant bass line would release the scent of burning coils. I don't recommend them to anyone.
250rms a side, no serious clipping got mine smelling pretty bad Possibly it was a first time burn in thing, but I agree and i think Sic would as well, that in a vented enclosure they should be given a bit under RMS or chopped off decently high (which I'm not doing I might add). The HFx's are supposed to handle more power and have a better coil.

Also these subs are no longer 25 a sub, they're something like 35, so they're not that hot of a deal for me anymore. I'll probably wait for the next thing to come a long. I really wish I had held onto my Phoenix Gold RSD's, those were the budget buy of a lifetime as far as subs go!

Actually they are still a steal if you think about it... The huge change from hfi to hfx is the motor.... they used higher grade slugs for way more motor force so they don't have to be in huge boxes anymore. More efficiency etc... Thats what sic told me about em

First time burn in? Ideally your subs should never burn lol. But yes I agree you can have a certain amount of smell without really damaging the coils. But do that too many times and you will get coil rub from "warping" the coils.

Aren't the Hfx's the same as the new Zues?
