Default relay question have a idea but needs some light?

ok first thing first im not sure if this belongs here or in the off topic section but i have a question basically my grandmas Saturn battery keeps dieing and we cant seem to find the source something is draining it down and we are pretty much fed up with it so every time she gets out the Car she has to take the pos Wire from the fuse box now my question is can i get a relay (i think thats what i need?) and put it on the main wire thats being removed and wire that to a switch in the car? possibly the key even better because elderly people forget? sorry long post but any answer is appreciated.

basically what im trying to do is break the connection with out having to get out pop the hood every time she leaves the car.

Yes, you could wiring in a relay of the correct rating making it a simple switch to cut power. Issue would be though that it is a bandaid for some other problem. Yes it would stop you from having to keep dealing with a dead battery, but then you could potentially have to deal with a much more serious problem later down the road by not repairing the issue to begin with.

Could be something simple as a glove box lamp or the like not going off (remember at a dealership I worked at that we had a spurt of cars all with dead batteries that turned out to be an underhood light run off a mercury switch that was not adjusted at the right angle, close the hood and the light stayed on) or could be a wiring short. Best bet is to get the car checked out so she is not left stranded somewhere.

go to your local parts store and get a battery cut off switch

i dont no if a standard relay would be able to handle the current dra of ur main power wire

This would be a far better solution than a relay.

Or you could just find the actual problem

Glad you are not having the battery problems anymore. I'd still get the system checked out to be sure you do not have a wiring issue/short floating around. Might be worth going and getting the battery and alternator checked too as you can do that free at most chain auto stores. Just make sure they have a good tester to do the job.

The cut off suggestion above is a better solution on a main wire. Reading your post my thoughts went a different direction in that you would be hooking to just a lower powered system wire not the main cable. Either way they are correct in the cut off.

Still a band aid though. The main focus should be to actually fix the problem which still could be lurking.

Best of luck!
